I have been interested in brain structure, such as white matter and hippocampus. These structures are altered in many brain diseases. White matter comprises half of the brain in humans. White matters maintains structural connectivity among the distant brain regions. In addition, white matter provide structural backbone for functional connectivity. Although white matter integrity impairment appears in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease, the cellular basis of why white matter impairment is unclear. I want to understand the cellular basis of impaired white matter integrity and cognitive deficits in AD.
A mid brain structure, plays central role during spatial navigation, vital for spatial learning and memory formation. However, hippocampal structural vulnerability has been consistently reported in many brain diseases.
I have been trying to improve our understanding on white matter and hippocampal vulnerability in cognitively compromised individuals and rodents.
