Dr. James Chmiel is the Division Chief for Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Sleep Medicine and a Professor of Professor Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Chmiel completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital/Northwestern University Medical School and pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Case Western University School of Medicine/Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Dr. Chmiel holds membership in numerous national professional societies including the American Thoracic Society, Society for Pediatric Research, and the American Pediatric Society. His research focuses on airway inflammation particularly as it relates to cystic fibrosis and asthma.

Early in his career, Dr. Chmiel did primarily basic science and translational research using the mouse agarose bead model to study the airway inflammatory response and the impact of exogenous anti-inflammatory therapies on it. Over that last several years, he has transitioned to a career in clinical research. His research involves understanding the inflammatory response of the lung, particularly as it relates to asthma and CF and the impact of anti-inflammatory therapeutics upon this response. He participates in both independent and multi-center clinical trials. In addition, Dr. Chmiel is interested in evaluating outcome measures for clinical trials in CF. He has been the lead PI on several multi-center studies sponsored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Therapeutic Development Network (TDN) and participated in several NIH asthma networks including the Inner City Asthma Consortium, AsthmaNet, and SARP 3. Currently, Dr. Chmiel is the Chair the CF Foundation’s Anti-inflammatory Strategic Planning Committee and a member of its Clinical Research Committee. The ultimate goal of all of Dr. Chmiel’s research is to provide better care for patients with CF and asthma.
