Bio

Dr. Meagher is a board-certified surgeon in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at IU School of Medicine.  She currently serves as the Director of Research for the Division of Acute Care Surgery, and the Assistant Director of Surgical Intensive Care Unit at IU Methodist Hospital. Dr. Meagher received her medical degree from University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, and her Masters in Public Health from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Dr. Meagher has a clinical focus in surgical palliative care, and she started and coordinates the Indiana Comfort Care Quilts program, which makes and provides quilts for patients at the end of life at IU Health Methodist Hospital. This program has provided more than 500 quilts for patients since 2018.  This organization has volunteers state-wide that donate time and resources to make quilts for the patients of Methodist Hospital.

Dr Meagher is an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the IU School of Medicine, and frequently teaches courses on implicit bias, provides upstander training, and has participated in the School of Medicine’s Achieving Inclusivity in Medicine program.  She is passionate about mentoring a diverse group of students, residents, and fellows, and is enthusiastic about increasing diversity and inclusivity awareness to the current and next generation of healthcare workers.

Dr. Meagher is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of multiple surgical and trauma organizations. She currently serves on the Rural Trauma Committee for EAST, Geriatric Trauma Committee for AAST, the IU School of Medicine Department of Surgery Diversity Council, IU School of Medicine Diversity Council, and IUPUI Interfaculty Council on Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

  • Research

    Dr. Meagher’s research focus is on health disparities pertaining to the emergency general surgical and trauma populations. This includes research in surgical workforce shortage, rural emergency surgery, and transfers of care through the hospital system. Prior to joining Indiana University, Dr. Meagher completed an AHRQ T32 training grant at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Since her arrival at Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Meagher received an AHRQ K12 award in Learning Health Systems to improve access for emergency surgical transfers, and the James A Madura Scholarship from the IU department of Surgery. 

    Current research projects include analysis of the use of damage control thoracotomy in trauma, post-surgical care of incarcerated patients, frailty in emergency general surgery patients, and application of behavioral alerts in the hospital setting.
