Dr. Hensel holds joint appointments as Associate Research Professor of Pediatrics, as well as an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at IUPUI. She has a broad background in behavioral science, adolescent development, gender and sexuality, innovative research methodology/data collection approaches and longitudinal, multilevel and complex data analysis. Dr. Hensel’s has collaboratively authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and this body of work has been cited over 1400 time in Google Scholar. In addition, her portfolio has been internationally recognized across multiple fields. In 2016 she was elected into the Society for Pediatric Research, and in 2017 she was elected as a Fellow in the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. Dr. Hensel has also been a Co- or Primary Investigator in several NIH funded research grants.

In 2020, Dr. Hensel lead the United States arm of the International Sexual Health And REproductive Health Study – a multi-country study to understand the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on sexual and reproductive health in diverse low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries. The study aimed to investigate how different isolation measures implemented by governments across the world –in response to the COVID-19 pandemic— have affected family structures, relationships, and access to sexual and reproductive health services.

Dr. Hensel is passionate about teaching, and regularly leads coursework focused on adolescent development, sexuality and sexual behavior, research methods and statistical analysis in both the Division of Adolescent Medicine as well as in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. She has mentored several dozen learners, including medicine and postdoctoral fellows, master’s and doctoral students and undergraduate students, as part of formal course work and independent study. Several of her students present their work at local, national and international research meetings, and have received internal and extramural funding for their work.
