Mattson, MD, PhD is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Neuroimmunology/ Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Program at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. Dr. Mattson directs the IU MS Center, which is a member of the Consortium of MS Centers. He established the IU MS Center upon his arrival at the IU School of Medicine in 1997; since then, the IU MS Center has been involved in many of the recent and ongoing clinical trials of new therapeutic agents for MS.
Dr. Mattson went to medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where he also earned his PhD in immunology studying cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities in MS. He then completed his neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and was a Medical Staff Fellow in the Neuroimmunology Branch of NINDS at the National Institutes of Health, where he did immunologic research in MS. He then moved to the University of Rochester, where he was a junior faculty member doing basic immunological research on MS with the help of a Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholar Award from the NMSS, prior to moving to IU.
Dr. Mattson has served on the Executive Committee of the National Clinical Advisory Board and Care Advisory Committee of the Indiana State Chapter of the NMSS.
