Dr. C. Max Schmidt is Vice Chairman and Professor of Surgery, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Surgical Services at University & Methodist Hospitals. Dr. Schmidt has a broad surgical oncology practice with a niche focus in patients with pancreatic disease. He is an internationally recognized expert on cystic lesions of the pancreas and a director of the Indiana University Health Pancreas Cyst and Cancer Early Detection Center ( www.pancyst.com ).
Dr. Schmidt performs clinical trials and translational research directed at discovering novel biomarkers and targeted treatments of patients with pancreatic neoplasia. His research has been continuously funded for 22 years. Funding sources have included NIH, VA, ACS, AACR, PanCAN, Lustgarten Foundation and Bigelow-Brand Charity. He currently is PI on an NIH U01 grant & is expecting to be awarded an NIH R01 this cycle.
He has served on several national surgical organizations as an officer, counselor or committee member, including the AAS, AASF, SUS, SSAT, MSA, CSA, & WSA. He is currently president-elect of the Central Surgical Association & Secretary of the Western Surgical Association. In the community, he has a significant following, evidenced by the Bigelow Charity Board, which holds major fundraisers for his early detection program. He is happily married for 35 years to his high school sweetheart, Christine Mae Schmidt, and has 5 children (ages 17-29 years) & 2 grandchildren (ages 6 months & 4 years).

Clinical Research Interests:
Director of the Indiana University Pancreas Cyst (and Hereditary Pancreatic Cancer Screening) Clinic (IUPCC) which coordinates the care and follow-up of close to 1,000 patients with precancerous lesions of the pancreas.
Internationally recognized expert on precancerous cystic lesions of the pancreas (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms and mucinous cystic neoplasms).
Director of the IU Robotic Pancreaticobiliary Surgery Program: performs minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (whipple), distal pancreatectomy and other complex pancreaticobiliary cases.
Basic Research Interests:
Dr. Schmidt performs clinical trials and translational research directed at discovering novel biomarkers and targeted treatments of patients with pancreatic and liver neoplasia. His research is also focused on pancreatic cancer early detection. He directs the Pancreatic Cancer and Cyst Early Detection Center (PCC-EDC). The mission of the PCC-EDC is to prevent pancreatic cancer through rigorous identification, tracking and treatment of patients "at risk" for pancreatic cancer through a multidisciplinary screening clinic, registry, community outreach, education, and research discovery. There are at present four components to the center:

Dr. Schmidt's research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Veteran's Affairs (VA), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) and the Lustgarten Foundation.
