Bio

Ben is a true Hoosier at heart (and in every other way). He was born in Bloomington, IN, and stayed there to go to undergrad at IU. He was an IU national team member and a Big Ten finalist as a swimmer during that time. Upon graduating, he went to medical school at IU. He completed medical school in 2004 and continued at IU as an Emergency Medicine resident. During his third year of residency, he was named the IUEM Resident Teacher of the Year. Upon completion of residency, Ben started as teaching faculty at Methodist, which he considers his dream job.

Since joining the Methodist faculty full time, Ben has made a substantial impact on our department in several ways. He led our departmental journal club for several years, and is one of our department's most established and published experts in Evidence Based Medicine. He continues to oversee the departmental monthly M&M conference. As of 2020, he serves as the departmental Director of Quality for IU Health's Academic Health Center. He has established a research niche in cardiac arrest, although he has published on a number of topics. There is still nothing he likes more about his job, however, than clinical teaching and the camaraderie of working in a teaching emergency department. He has won the Methodist EM Faculty Teacher of the Year (as voted on by the EM residents) twice, and was Methodist's inaugural winner of the Chisholm-Rodgers Teaching Award. He has also won teacher of the year for the transitional resident program. In combining his affinity for teaching, science, and research, he is now serving as an overseer of EM resident research projects.

When he's not working, Ben has many interests that keep him busy. He enjoys any outdoor sports, including volleyball, frisbee, running, scuba, and fishing. He has a serious fondness for good food (steak) and drink (scotch). He is the guy you are looking for if you like to throw a friendly wager on a sporting event or card game. He has two amazing daughters, Kira and Haley, who are both now swimming competitively.

Key Publications

Many of the publications I'm most proud of are publications that I was the senior (last) supervising author on for resident or junior faculty first authors.
