The Comprehensive Basic Science Exam (CBSE) will be on Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at your campus. Please remember that this is a mandatory exam. All students are expected to be present on their campus for this exam. The projected session time is five hours and thirty minutes.

The following information is from the NBME website:

The CBSE uses multiple choice items based on information typically covered during basic science medical education courses. The content of the CBSE items resembles the content of those in Step 1.

The goals of the CBSE are to:

  1. Familiarize you with a Step 1 testing environment through being timed, not allowed food or drinks, and needing to focus for an extended period of time
  2. Familiarize you with question formats
  3. Allow you to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement in your knowledge base approximately two months prior to your Step 1 exam.

Please refer to this page on MedNet for more information about preparing for Step 1, including this mandatory exam. Also, refer to this Score Interpretation Guide provided by NBSME. After you receive your scores, we recommend you discuss the score with your lead advisor and adjust your study plan as needed for Step 1.
