Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a specialty dealing with the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal issues. Physiatrists treat patients with injuries related to work and sports, trauma and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Rehabilitation addresses major physical impairments such as stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury, often in an inpatient setting. PM&R doctors also perform electrodiagnosis (electromyography-EMG) to diagnose nerve and muscle disease.
Physician educators in the IU School of Medicine Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation provide patient care in the school’s Indianapolis clinical partner facilities, including the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, Richard L.
