Program Components

  1. International Field Experience—Residents will complete a two month field experience at an approved partnership site. Participants in the Global Health Residency Track will be given special preference for scheduling their international experience.
  2. Interdisciplinary Global Health Curriculum—Residents with participate in one noon session and one evening session per month. These educational sessions include guest speakers, journal clubs, and resident presentations. The sessions are meant to foster community among residents and spark discussion about important issues in global health.
  3. Faculty Mentor—Each participating resident will be paired with a faculty mentor from their parent department. Each faculty mentor has substantial global health experience and will be a resource for the resident in his or her professional development, including the planning and execution of their scholarly project.
  4. Continuity Clinic—Global Health residents will be based in clinics providing care to the medically underserved. If desired, residents may elect to be placed in a clinic serving a largely Hispanic or other immigrant population.
  5. Local opportunities—Indianapolis abounds with “local global health” experiences for residents. Available options include everything from an elective month focused on a special interest topic or project to an afternoon spent in the Riley International Adoption Clinic. Partnerships around the city are still being actively sought and created.
  6. Longitudinal Web-Based Curriculum—Residents will complete a series of case-based and theme-based modules over the course of their training. These modules focus on the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the developing world, social and cultural determinants of health, public health challenges and practice, as well as region-specific cases to prepare residents for their chosen field experience.
  7. Certification in Global Health—Residents obtain certificate of additional competency in global health upon completion of requirements.
