Why I chose IU Psychiatry Residency: My husband and I were trying to do our own “couple’s match” with another specialty that unfortunately doesn’t participate in the couple’s match. So I was honestly initially interested in IU psych because we were looking for spots that had multiple programs in one area. And then, the night before the interview, I sat next to Hamilton, now one of the CAP fellows. He’s just one of the best people and also a fellow Michigander, so I started to feel comfortable early on. Then the following day during the interviews, it became clear that Hamilton’s warmth wasn’t misplaced — this was a place where people cared for each other. The interviews felt like a combination of seeing if I would be a good fit as well as if IU would be a good fit for me — like the people cared to bring me what I was looking for in a residency program. This was a pretty incredible feeling after all the worry of matching, in particular when you’re trying for a more complicated match outcome. After the tour and seeing all of the practice sites and clinical exposure that IU had to offer, in a midwestern urban area that we’d been hoping for, it became clear that IU would be our #1.
