Bio

Hometown: Indianapolis

Undergraduate Degree (and Institution): BA in English, Vanderbilt University

Medical School: IU School of Medicine

When did you know you wanted to be a doctor?: In high school, I had a mentor who moved to an underserved country permanently to work as a general surgeon. Her big-picture perspective was inspiring to me, and I decided that I also wanted to have a meaningful career in medicine.

Why did you choose to specialize in ophthalmology?: I was drawn to ophthalmology because of the impact the field has on patients’ quality of life.

How did you feel when you matched with IU School of Medicine for your residency? What about this program appealed to you?: I was thrilled to match at IU. I had worked with residents and faculty as a medical student and felt that the learning culture here was what I was looking for in a training program.

What has been your most memorable experience in residency so far?: Performing bedside procedures with senior residents while on overnight call has provided great learning opportunities.

Who is a faculty member you enjoy working with? Why?: Dr. Martin is a gifted, enthusiastic educator who guided me through several of my first cataract surgeries.

What do you admire most about your co-residents?: I feel fortunate to work with such a great group of co-residents who are all hard-working and kind people.

What gets you through a long, stressful shift?: On the harder days, I try to remind myself that the work I do is making people’s lives better. I also remind myself that my supportive family is waiting for me at home when I’m done.

What are some of your hobbies and interests? How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?: I love spending time with my wife and two children, running, working on house projects, and traveling. I make sure there are times every day that I mentally step away from work to be fully present with my family.
