Bio
Why I chose general surgery as a career: I like surgery, and I don’t mind the hours.
Why I chose the IU School of Medicine General Surgery Residency Program: The scope of IU’s large program was a draw for me. Residents experience the near total breadth of surgical pathology; residents learn to function in a mix of public and private, urban and rural, and economically diverse hospital systems; and residents are afforded opportunities and institutional resources to pursue many service, research, or career interests. Since matching here, I have also come to appreciate and personally benefit from IU’s presence locally, nationally, and globally.
Professional/Research Interests: I was the first Surgical Education Research fellow at IUSM Surgery, and I am finishing my Master’s in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Within surgical education at IU, there are ongoing research opportunities in simulation, curriculum development, feedback and assessment, and mental skills training. In addition to serving on curriculum and evaluation committees, I have had the privilege to represent my co-residents as Resident Councilor to the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Through ACS, IU residents have opportunities to advocate for our patients and for real health policy reforms at the state and federal levels.
Personal Interests/Hobbies: I have visited every US state except North Dakota. I can rip a disc 70+ yards. I enjoy owning staff in the annual resident-faculty softball game. True to my southern roots, I can play the guitar and a little banjo… though not near as much since residency started. I speak Spanish and am currently trying to learn some passable Mandarin.
