Funding for the Center for Medical Genomics service core at IU School of Medicine comes from the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund.

History of the Medical Genomics Core

The Center for Medical Genomics at Indiana University School of Medicine was founded by Howard J. Edenberg, PhD, in 2000, with the initial support from the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund and additional funding from the Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN). Under the leadership of Dr. Edenberg, the center has grown to a major genomics center that provides a broad variety of genomics services to investigators at Indiana University and beyond.

In 2016, Yunlong Liu, PhD, a professor of medical and molecular genetics, was appointed as the Director of the Center for Medical Genomics. With significant investment from IU School of Medicine and as part of the IU School of Medicine Precision Medicine program, the center significantly expanded its sequencing capacity by deploying two Illumina sequencers: one HiSeq 4000 and one NextSeq 500. Since 2018, the Center for Medical Genomics has acquired additional Illumina sequencers (two NovaSeq 6000 and one MiSeqDX) and three 10x Genomics Chromium systems to offer a wider range of services and keep up with rapidly growing demand.
