Research Service Core Labs

Pricing

Independent pricing represents a reasonable amount of supplies for fixation and embedding, including, slides, grids, stains and equipment usage. The Electron Microscopy Center provides four hours of training in electron microscopy techniques and use of the TEM. The cost for this training is charged to the researcher at the rate of $165/hour. Final decision on whether researcher can go on their own is determined by the lab manager.

Fifteen mls of a modified Karnovsky’s fixative can be provided for up to 10 specimens; additional fixatives or special types are available at an extra cost. Tissue specimens for TEM should be about 2 x 2 x 2mm or smaller. For special types of specimens (cultured cells, thin layers of tissue, tissue that requires special orientation), email Caroline Miller for instructions.

Outputs refer to direct digital images. Electron Microscopy film is not used in the Electron Microscopy Center.

Cryo Preparation:TBATBA
Microtomy:
Thick Sectioning and Staining/blk$50.00/blk
Thin Sectioning and Staining/blk8 grids$70.00/blk
Eight grids represents enough for two immuno attempts; a $5 charge per grid over eight applies. Thicks and thins are required for all microtomy whether TEM morph or immuno. More things (8 grids) are required for immuno since they are needed for immunostaining.
Immunostaining at the TEM level, for each attempt & antibody****$500.00
Immunostaining at the LM level (on plastic thick sections), for each attempt and antibody$275.00
Negative Staining (per grid)$50.00
Results cannot be guaranteed, because antibody specificity/titer, quality/fixation of tissue and amount of target protein can limit success. Investigator provides primary antibody and necessary background literature.
Preparation of coated grids without negative staining$40.00

Evaluation/Consultation:

Each incoming project receives an hour consultation at no charge, thereafter an $90 per hour charge applies for time spent researching techniques, evaluating data (quantitative and/or qualitative), or for anything beyond routine.

External/ Commercial Projects

Each external or commercial project is charged double the cost of regular fee schedule due to lack of subsidy.
