The Barnett Lab, led by William K. Barnett, PhD, studies applied informatics that support the development of systems and services that enable precision health methodologies and data-driven research.

Programs include the Informatics Infrastructure for the Indiana University Precision Health Initiative, the Informatics Core for the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD), and the Greater Plains Collaborative clinical data research network.

Active Research

Precision Health

For the IU School of Medicine Precision Health Initiative, the Barnett Lab leads the Informatics Infrastructure program, an applied informatics effort to develop and deploy innovative systems and services to bring precision approaches to care and improved health outcomes. A partnership between IU School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, this program has three components: a Data Commons that aggregates and integrates a wide variety of clinical, genomic, and environmental and behavioral data that are required for precision health approaches; an environment of software services and applications that support clinical research; and a program of patient engagement tools that support recruitment, patient empowerment in research, and patient reported outcomes.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

The Barnett Lab develops data standards, aggregates and integrates data from clinical studies, supports data quality review and analytics, and makes data available to the broader research community through a data sharing program as part of the Informatics Core for the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD).

Clinical Data Research Network

The Barnett Lab is the Site PI for the PCORnet Greater Plains Collaborative Clinical Data Research Network, a network of 12 academic health centers that collaboratively share data to support multi-site trials and patient centered outcomes research.

Barnett serves as the site co-I for the elements of this initiative that relate to (a) EHR-driven participant recruitment support and innovation and (b) clinical data warehouse system support and innovation for participant recruitment across the CTSA Consortium, and as part of the overall Trial Innovation Network for NCATS.

The Greater Plains Collaborative (GPC) is currently a network of 12 leading medical centers across the central United States who are committed to a shared vision of improving health care delivery through ongoing learning, adoption of evidence-based practices, and active research dissemination. Barnett oversees the design, development, and operation of informatics architectures to support multi-site trials through the GPC at Indiana University.
