Bioethics and Subject Advocacy Program

The Bioethics and Subject Advocacy Program (BSAP) is part of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) and brings together research subject advocates and ethics experts from the Center for Bioethics, IU School of Medicine, IU Bloomington, Notre Dame, and Purdue University to assure the ethical conduct of translational research throughout the Indiana CTSI. This work includes collaboration, consultation and education that protects and involves patients and laypeople throughout the research lifecycle.

Translational Research Ethics Consult Service

The Bioethics and Subject Advocacy Program provides free consultations to researchers to help clarify and address ethical issues that arise in planning, carrying out and analyzing human-subjects research. Areas for possible consults include but are not limited to:

  • Recruitment and informed consent issues
  • Vulnerable, pediatric or impaired research subjects
  • Data sharing with research subjects or a broader community
  • Biobank construction and governance
  • Design and implementation of a Data Safety Monitoring Plan or Board (DSMP/B)

Researchers can request a consult by completing the request form or by emailing Dr. Peter Schwartz.

Translational Research Ethics: Applied Topics (TREATs)

The Bioethics and Subject Advocacy Program (BSAP) of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) offers a series of monthly presentations about ethics issues in translational research.  The presentations are each 30 minutes long and followed by questions and answers. TREATs are available for live streaming and archived. View the schedule of TREATs Talks.
