Academic Authorship

The pressure to publish has a prominent role in academia. With the expectation to be involved in research, there are sometimes numerous names credited for a published work. However, there is not a clear idea of the roles of these contributors and what their responsibilities for the work were. These are important delineation since authorship can have significant academic and financial implications. What is the minimum standard to be considered an author?
