INDIANAPOLIS— Indiana University School of Medicine is promoting one of its own to serve as the next leader of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Peter S. Pang, MD, MS, will assume the role of department chair, effective October 1, and will have oversight and responsibility for the program’s clinical, education and research programs. He has served as interim chair since October 2019.
“Peter Pang is an exemplar of a physician-leader,” said IU School of Medicine Dean Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD, MHSA. “He has demonstrated a commitment to medical education, research and patient care to advance emergency care in Indiana and beyond. His leadership has been instrumental to the COVID-19 pandemic response, and I am confident that he is the best choice to lead the department through such a time as this.”
Pang graduated from Brown University and attended medical school at the University of Texas-San Antonio. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham & Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital before earning his Master of Science in clinical investigation from Northwestern University. His first faculty appointment was at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine where he held various positions during his 10-year tenure, including associate chief and the associate director of experimental therapeutics within the Center for Cardiovascular Innovation. His academic interest is acute heart failure.
He joined the IU School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine in 2014, and in 2018 was appointed to the newly created role of vice chair for strategic innovation to facilitate cross-collaboration across the department’s education and research missions. He was named vice chair for operations and clinical strategy in 2019 before taking the helm as interim chair in October. In addition to chair, Pang will hold the title of Rolly McGrath Professor.
Physicians in the Department of Emergency Medicine are part of IU Health Physicians, IU School of Medicine’s faculty practice plan. They care for patients through IU Health, the school’s primary health system partner, as well as Eskenazi Health and have extensive pre-hospital responsibilities and work in partner with Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
The department has a strong record of advocacy, residency and fellowship training and patient care. Faculty and trainees play a critical role in emergency care statewide with nearly 400,000 patient visits annually.

I am excited by what we will accomplish together.”
