FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS — The Great Lakes Equity Center, in collaboration with the Indiana University School of Education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, is accepting applications for the 2016 Equity Leaders Institute, “Centering Equity in Curricular and Instructional Practices: Using Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy.”

The two-day institute will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 21 and 22 at the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd.

Early-bird registration fees will be in effect for applications submitted by Aug 21. The application process allows institute planners to gain a sense of potential participants’ areas of need and interests to inform session content and activities.

Each year, the center welcomes about 35 to 40 equity-oriented practitioners and community members from across the nation for this event. Registration is limited to ensure the learning experiences are intimate and individualized. The Institute provides opportunities for participants to engage in two full days of intensive, collegial study, discussion and custom planning related to targeted issues of educational equity.

The 2016 institute will focus on ways to utilize universal design for learning and culturally sustaining pedagogy in curricular planning. UDL and CSP are both frameworks for eliminating barriers to learning for diverse students. The institute will explore specific practical applications that combine these frameworks to create inclusive learning opportunities that center students as expert learners and leverage youth and community practices.

Featured speakers at the institute are Frederico Waitoller and Kathleen King Thorius. They will discuss innovative approaches in curricular planning that center on equity.
