IUPUI Honors College hosts leadership training for freshman scholars

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS — The annual Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Honors College Emerging Leaders Workshop takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Room 305 of the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. The event prepares high-achieving IUPUI freshmen to be campus peer counselors and leaders.

“The Emerging Leaders seminar helped encourage me as a leader,” said sophomore Alyssa Wickham, who attended the workshop last year.

The workshop “helped motivate me to be a better leader and tailor my leadership style toward one that is focused on utilizing the strengths of others,” said Wickham, who is now serving as vice president of the Honors College Student Council and president of the Phi Eta Sigma honor society.

Workshop sessions include:

  • A keynote address on multicultural leadership at 9:30 a.m.
  • A student panel discussion at 10:30 a.m.
  • A general session on using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator for self-evaluation at 1:30 p.m.

The event also features an etiquette luncheon from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Room 309 of the Campus Center. Professional butler Anthony Cawthon will present “Dine With Confidence,” a learn-as-you-eat luncheon.

“Anthony helps the scholars navigate formal dining with a humorous approach,” Wickham said. “No scholar will ever be left wondering which fork to use during an interview, and Anthony gives tips on ways interviewers might covertly test their manners and conduct.”
