INDIANAPOLIS – A record number of people are presenting their research Thursday during the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center’s Cancer Research Day.

One hundred and forty-two graduate and medical students, clinical nurses, postdoctoral and medical fellows, and research technicians conducting cancer research at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University and the Harper Cancer Research Institute — a collaboration between the IU School of Medicine and the University of Notre Dame — submitted abstracts in four categories:

  • Basic science
  • Behavioral science
  • Population science/epidemiology
  • Translational/clinical research

Participants will present scientific posters from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Certificates and cash awards for winning scientific posters will be announced at an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to another successful Cancer Research Day in which researchers and future researchers are sharing their findings from studies from a variety of cancers,” said Harikrishna Nakshatri, B.V.Sc., Ph.D., associate director of education at the IU Simon Cancer Center. “Poster abstracts are being presented on everything from multiple myeloma to brain tumors, as well as pancreatic, breast, prostate and other cancers. It’s a day of learning and sharing.”

Nancy Davidson, M.D., will present the keynote address, “Tackling Hormone Resistance in Breast Cancer,” at 1:30 p.m.  Dr. Davidson is director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, associate vice chancellor for cancer research and professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Cancer Research Day will take place in the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. It is free and open to the public.
