INDIANAPOLIS — A record number of people are presenting their research on Thursday during the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center’s Cancer Research Day.

One hundred and forty-one graduate and medical students, clinical nurses, postdoctoral and medical fellows, and research technicians conducting cancer research at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University and the Harper Cancer Research Institute — a collaboration between the IU School of Medicine and the University of Notre Dame — submitted abstracts in four categories:

  • Basic science
  • Behavioral science
  • Population science/epidemiology
  • Translational/clinical research

Participants will present scientific posters that complement their abstracts from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Certificates and cash awards for winning scientific posters will be announced at an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

“We’re especially excited about this year’s Cancer Research Day because of the record-breaking number of abstracts that were submitted,” said Harikrishna Nakshatri, B.V.Sc., Ph.D., associate director of education at the IU Simon Cancer Center. “Researchers, whether they’re faculty or a grad student, are sharing their science on everything from pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer and more. The submission of abstracts from cancer researchers across the state highlights the collaborative nature of cancer research in Indiana.”

Tim A. Ahles, Ph.D., will present the keynote address, “Cognitive Change Associated with Cancer and Cancer Treatments: Update on the State of the Science,” at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Ahles is a professor of psychology at Weill Cornell Medical College, and he is a member of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Cancer Research Day is in Room 450 at the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. It is free and open to the public.

Cancer Research Day is an annual event that aims to increase understanding and awareness of IU Simon Cancer Center research endeavors and encourage collaboration with other cancer research institutions in Indiana.
