Depression & heart disease.  Depression is a recognized risk factor for heart disease.  Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis psychologist Jesse Stewart, Ph.D., will discuss the study he’s conducting called “Beating the Blues for Your Heart,” the first project of its kind to discover if treating depression can help lower the risk for, and possibly prevent, heart disease.

Advances in heart valve research. Heart surgeon Marc Gerdisch, M.D., will talk about important new breakthroughs in treating damaged heart valves, including tissue regeneration. Dr. Gerdisch is chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the St. Francis Heart Center in Indianapolis.

Scary photos for smokers.  Will ugly photos on cigarette packs get smokers to quit? Indiana University psychiatrist Andy Chambers,  M.D., will review the research on the deterrent effect of photo warnings on cigarette labels. Dr. Chambers does basic neuroscience research on nicotine addiction.

The Longevity Project. What makes for long life? You may be surprised. Howard Friedman, Ph.D., will chat with Sound Medicine’s Steve Bogdewic, Ph.D., about common traits possessed by people who live long lives. Dr. Friedman and co-researcher Leslie Martin are the latest in a line of scientists studying a cohort of individuals born in 1910. Friedman is a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside. The book documenting the study is called The Longevity Project: Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark Eight-Decade Study.

Stress as a health predictor. Can current life stress predict our future health? A new long-term study is testing this idea. Lead investigator Linda Delunas, Ph.D., will explain how her team is gathering data from thousands of participants via the Internet to test the hypothesis. Dr. Delunas is a professor of nursing at Indiana University Northwest.
