Bio

Rob Lowden, MS, joined Indiana University School of Medicine in January 2019 as its inaugural chief information officer. He also serves as an executive associate dean and member of the executive leadership team that ensures the school fulfills its mission to improve health care through excellence in medical education, research and clinical care.

In his role as CIO, Lowden is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive information technology strategy for the largest medical school in the United States, with 11,000 faculty, staff and learners spread across nine campuses. He has oversight of school-wide information systems, technologies, applications, and services, and ensures strategic IT alignment with partners such as Indiana University Health and the Regenstrief Institute.

Lowden has extensive experience implementing creative solutions at scale for higher education technology challenges, including at Indiana University.

Prior to joining IU School of Medicine, he served as IU’s associate vice president of enterprise systems. He was instrumental in IU’s adoption of its course management system, effectively rolled out two-factor authentication to all IU constituents across the state, and was deeply involved in the university’s Decision Support Initiative, the goal of which was to provide timely, relevant, and accurate data to facilitate better decision making.

He has held multiple IT roles at IU dating back to 1998. In addition, Lowden served as interim executive director of Unizin, a membership-based consortium of large research institutions whose mission is to improve the learner experiences with digital teaching and learning resources.

Lowden holds a Master of Science in technology and a Bachelor of Science in computer technology, both from Purdue University. Lowden served in the United States Navy in roles including Ceremonial Honor Guard member in Washington D.C., Search and Rescue Swimmer in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and communications specialist in the Nimitz Battlegroup in Southeast Asia, ultimately earning an honorable discharge for his service.
