School of Medicine Graduation
Every year, the statewide Indiana University School of Medicine community—along with family and friends—come together in Indianapolis to celebrate the graduating class of students from undergraduate, graduate, and medical school programs.
The achievements of students from these IU School of Medicine programs are honored at both the IUPUI Commencement Ceremony and the IU School of Medicine recognition ceremony.
IU School of Medicine Recognition Ceremony
This intimate recognition program is limited to graduates of IU School of Medicine. At the event, speakers share inspiring stories and celebrate student success. The program culminates with students walking across stage to receive diplomas. Graduate and professional students are also hooded on stage, a special ceremonial signifier of their accomplishment.

Students are welcome but not required to attend the IUPUI program in addition to the IU School of Medicine program at the Convention Center. Learn more about IUPUI’s Commencement Ceremony
Downtown Indianapolis has many parking options. However, because this event occurs on a work day, there may be limited availability in some garages. Parking garages close to the intersection of Capitol Avenue and Maryland Street are closest to where the Sagamore Ballroom is located in the Convention Center.
Tickets are not required for graduation. However, seats cannot be reserved and fill up quickly. When determining the number of attendees to invite, students and families are encouraged to be considerate of the limited space and needs of other students’ families.
Medical students and their families are also invited to the Senior Toast Reception. The 2019 reception takes place 5:30-10 pm Friday, May 10, at the Indianapolis Public Library (40 East St. Clair Street, Indianapolis, IN 46201) after the IU School of Medicine recognition ceremony. The recognition includes student, staff and faculty awards, heavy appetizers, and a dance floor.
