Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine! Our tripartite mission: to provide outstanding patient care, train world-class emergency physicians, and advance the specialty of emergency medicine through discovery, creativity, and scholarship. It is a privilege to do what we do every day. Thank you for your interest in the Department of Emergency Medicine!

Patient Care

Providing the highest quality care and experience is a promise we make to every person who walks through our door. We staff 10 hospital emergency departments across two health care systems, with nearly 400,000 visits per year. Sites include busy, urban academic Level 1 trauma centers, high volume community EDs, and rural critical access hospitals. Our team of over 140 physicians and 40 advanced practice are incredibly dedicated and relentless in their pursuit to deliver outstanding care. One of our major goals is to improve health in our communities, and in the months and years to come, we will reduce disparities in outcomes. We are committed to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s “quadruple aim”: improving population health, reducing the cost of health care, ensuring an outstanding experience, and advocating for the wellness of our physicians and advanced practice providers.

Education

For nearly 50 years, the Department of Emergency Medicine has trained outstanding emergency physicians. We are dedicated to training the next generation of leaders and each and every one of our 72 residents is first and foremost, a stellar physician. Teaching medical students is a joy and a source of wellness; training future physicians is one way to ‘pay it forward’ in honor of those who have taught us. Emergency Medicine is a required 4th year clerkship in one of the largest medical schools in the nation. In addition, we have outstanding fellowships: training pediatric emergency physicians, motor sports medicine, emergency medical services, disaster medicine, global health, ultrasound, toxicology, informatics, and simulation. The breadth and depth of our clinical experience across three busy, urban level 1 trauma centers in the pediatric, university, and county settings provide a second to none experience to all of our learners.

Research

The Department of Emergency Medicine ranks in the top 10 nationally for NIH funding. Additionally, we have investigators funded by AHA, AHRQ, and PCORI. Our robust clinical research infrastructure, statistical support, and biobanking, along with an accomplished and world-renown faculty provides outstanding mentorship opportunities and research training. Our goal is to transform emergency care through discovery, creativity, and innovation. The Department of Emergency Medicine has a rich and proud history and Indianapolis is an amazing place to work and live. We have this amazing privilege to do meaningful work every day. At the same time, we know improvement and excellence require relentless dedication and effort. Continuing our upward growth requires a diverse and vibrant faculty; wellness is and will remain a key priority. I invite you to discover more about our department and programs.

Welcome!

Sincerely,
