The Emergency Ultrasound program requires fellows to meet robust training requirements as outlined by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Emergency Ultrasound Curriculum

Fellowship Requirements

Fellows are required to meet fellowship requirements as outlined by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship guidelines include:

  • Completion of at least 1,000 ultrasound exams
  • Participation in at least two research projects during the fellowship
  • Active involvement in didactic and hands-on teaching during the fellowship year
  • Ultrasound quality assurance and image review independently and with other ultrasound faculty

In addition, fellows are actively involved in:

  • Directing the ultrasound rotation for emergency medicine interns
  • Assisting with the POCUS curriculum integration for medical students
  • Assisting with POCUS research activities within the emergency department

Didactics

Didactics are delivered through in-person and online modules. In-person pathologic ultrasound image review sessions occur every Friday. Additionally, there is an emergency ultrasound conference that occurs twice monthly with specific didactic education aimed at fellows, residents and students.

IU School of Medicine is actively involved in building the POCUS framework at several community hospitals. Fellows have the opportunity to learn how to create a POCUS program that allows for adequate clinical documentation and billing.

We also focus an entire month on how to create and deliver an asynchronous POCUS curriculum. This includes learning how to illustrate and publish material online.
