Clinical Laboratory Science Learning Outcomes
The Bachelor degree program in Clinical Laboratory Science at Indiana University School of Medicine prepares graduates with the skills and experience needed to work in a clinical laboratory. Upon successful program completion, Clinical Laboratory Science graduates have the training to demonstrate the following entry-level competencies:
Demonstrate an understanding of the underlying scientific principles of laboratory testing, including technical, procedural, and problem-solving aspects. Recognize the importance of proper test selection, causes of discrepant test results, deviations of test results, and correlation of abnormal data with pathologic states.
Perform proficiently the full range of clinical laboratory tests in areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, serology/ immunology, coagulation, and molecular and other emerging diagnostics and participate in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory.
Provide administrative and technical consulting services on laboratory testing.
Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis and differentiate and resolve technical, instrument, and physiologic causes of problems or unexpected test results.
Incorporate principles of educational methodologies in the instruction of laboratory personnel, other health care professionals, and consumers.
Give direction and guidance to technical and support personnel. Apply knowledge of financial operations, marketing, and human resource management of the clinical laboratory to enable cost-effective, high-quality, value-added laboratory services.
