MD Dual Degree Programs

Medical students in South Bend can complete coursework for a combined degree by adjusting the traditional medical education schedule. Through the IU School of Medicine partnership with Notre Dame, students at this campus can pursue a MS/MD or MD/PhD.

MD/MS Program

Medical students who want to treat patients and influence policy for those in greatest need can earn credentials for a future in global health through the MD/MS program offered by IU School of Medicine and the University of Notre Dame’s Eck Institute for Global Health.

This combined degree program prepares leaders with a medical degree and a master’s focused specifically on international populations. Students in this program benefit from IU School of Medicine’s longstanding involvement in abetting AIDS in Africa through the AMPATH Program and achieve medical school and global health training within a five-year calendar.

While finishing the second year of medical school, students apply to Notre Dame’s global health master’s program. Admitted students begin third-year rotations during the summer, and then enter Notre Dame’s 12-month graduate program in late August. Upon completion of the master’s program, medical students resume clinical education as part of the medical school curriculum.

While the program is open to all IU School of Medicine students, those who matriculate at the South Bend campus have the advantage of participating in the Eck Institute community before their master’s work begins—and after. Find details about the Notre Dame Master of Science in Global Health program, including how to enroll, curriculum and financial aid, on the Notre Dame website.

MD/PhD Program

IU School of Medicine-South Bend partners with the University of Notre Dame on an MD/PhD program that provides an MD from IU School of Medicine and a doctorate from Notre Dame. Generally, MD/PhD students spend their first two years in medical school classes before progressing through the PhD curriculum and then complete the final two years of medical school clinical rotations. This program is customized to meet each student’s specific interest.
