Gary Campus Student Services

Medical students at the IU School of Medicine-Northwest-Gary campus have privileges to all student services provided locally by Indiana University and can access a range of centralized support services from IU School of Medicine, including financial support and student mistreatment complaint handling. Plus, with small class sizes and accessible faculty, students at this campus can easily access personalized support needed to ensure success in medical school.

Student Support Services in Gary

As part of the statewide IU School of Medicine academic advising program, each student is assigned a Lead Advisor and a Volunteer Faculty Advisor. Students can access this support in Northwest–Gary by contacting Corona Wiley by phone at 219-980-6709 or by email at cwiley@iun.edu.  Her office is located in Dunes Medical Room 3001.

The IU School of Medicine is committed to helping students with disabilities succeed academically. MD students in need of disability accommodations should apply to the IU School of Medicine Disabilities Accommodations Committee.

At the Gary campus, medical students can access primary care and clinical specialists for medical issues at the IU Northwest Health and Wellness Clinic.

Students at the Gary campus who are seeking Mental Health Services—for any reason—have several support options. IU School of Medicine offers psychiatric and counseling services via telephone or in person by Samia Hasan, MD, Jessica Fultz, MSW, LCSW, and Suzanne Kunkle, PhD. Call 317-278-2381 to schedule an appointment. Locally, students can contact the IU-Northwest Counseling Center by phone at 219-980-6741 or by email at iunoocs@iun.edu. Personal counseling services are also available through Porter Starke Services in Valparaiso and Regional Mental Health in Merrillville.

IU School of Medicine-Northwest-Gary enjoys a highly supportive community that has helped raise important scholarship funds. All medical students at the Gary campus are eligible for scholarship consideration, provided that the FAFSA form is submitted to IU School of Medicine in the Financial Aid office. Some awards carry restrictions regarding academic achievement, geographic residence and/or financial need. Even with restrictions, most students are eligible for one or more of the Gary campus scholarships.
