Message from the urology residency program director

The Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Urology residency program offers residents a broad spectrum of urology experience in a five-year program including six months of general surgery training as an intern. The program is ranked in the top 20 in the nation by the Doximity Residency Navigator and U.S. News & World Report Ranking. The department is the only tertiary care center for urology for the state of Indiana and the surrounding counties with a population of over seven million.

Urology residents gain experience at five training sites on the downtown Indianapolis campus and one suburban hospital, focusing on clinical training and research. Unique and different strengths at each site contribute to comprehensive training experience with exposure to complex surgery even as a junior resident:

  • University Hospital: uro oncology and robotic surgery
  • Methodist Hospital: urolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and robotic surgery
  • Eskenazi Hospital: general urology
  • VA Medical Center: general urology including robotic Surgery
  • Riley Hospital for Children: complex pediatric urology
  • IU North: endourology and robotic surgery

Department of Urology faculty have been responsible for major advances in urinary tract reconstruction, both in adult and pediatric patient populations. There is a long history of innovation and surgical excellence in the department including advances in testis cancer, bladder cancer and reconstruction, complex pediatric reconstruction, percutaneous stone surgery, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate and robotic surgery.

Residents’ operative volume for most complex cases are over the 90th percentile compared to other urology programs. All residents are trained in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery with considerable console time during robot-assisted surgery. The opportunities residents receive and the faculty’s commitment to the development of each resident help residents reach the maximum of their potential, realize personal goals and attain positions in academic or community practices.
