Applying to General Surgery Residency

Indiana University School of Medicine Surgery Department General Surgery Residency Training Program offers eight interviews during November-January of each academic year. Interview offers are not extended until the General Surgery Education Leadership have reviewed the Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs) released in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) on October. Eligibility and Requirements

The Department of Surgery’s General Surgery Residency Training Program offers eight interviews during November -January of each academic year. Interview offers are not extended until the General Surgery Education Leadership have reviewed the Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs) released in the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS®). The IU School of Medicine Surgery program interviews approximately 120 applicants for 10 categorical positions.

Categorical Surgery Position Recruitment Dates for 2020-2021 Interns:

  • November 7
  • November 14
  • November 21
  • November 26
  • December 5
  • December 10
  • January 9
  • January 16

Only complete residency applications are reviewed. A completed residency application includes:

  • Completed ERAS profile
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must come from either a program chair and program director
  • Submission of USMLE Step 1 Score
  • Medical school transcript
  • Personal statement

Minimum Requirements for U.S. Graduates

  • Completed ERAS® profile
  • Three Letters of Recommendation – one of which must come from either a Program Chair and/or Program Director
  • Number of Pass Attempts on all 3 USMLE Exams: 1 | USMLE Step 1 Score Minimum: 230
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Personal Statement

Minimum Application Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

  •  Completed ERAS® profile
  • Three Letters of Recommendation – one of which must be from a practicing U.S. physician in Surgery
  • Number of Pass Attempts on all 3 USMLE Exams: 1 | USMLE Step 1 Score Minimum: 230
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) if applicable
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Personal Statement
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate acquired at least 60 days prior to start of anticipated residency start date
  • Visa Sponsorship: J1 Visa applicants only; we do not sponsor H1B visas
  • FMG applicants must not be more than 2 years removed from medical school training
  • U.S. Clinical Experience is not mandatory, but encouraged

Preliminary Surgery Positions

Preliminary Surgery applicants must adhere to the complete residency application outline above. Recruitment dates for initial surgery are scheduled after categorical interview dates are completed. Program interviews approximately 15-30 preliminary surgery applicants for from two to five initial surgery openings. The number of preliminary surgery applicants we are allowed to match fluctuates annually.
