Application for General Surgery Residency

Eligibility and Requirements

Interested in applying to the General Surgery residency program at Indiana University School of Medicine?  Please review minimum requirements for eligibility below. All applications must be received through the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS®).

Application Timeline

  • Applications for categorical positions will be reviewed with interview offers extended after the release of the Medical Student Performance Evaluations on October 1.
  • Applications for preliminary positions will be reviewed with interview offers extended after December 1.

Minimum Requirements for U.S. Graduates

  • ERAS® Application with Photo
  • Letters of Recommendation (3 minimum)
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 Score Minimum: 230
  • Number of Pass Attempts on all 3 USMLE Exams: 1
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation
  • Medical Student Transcripts
  • Personal Statement

Minimum Application Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG)

  • ERAS® Application with Photo
  • Letters of Recommendation (3 minimum; 1 must be from a practicing physician in the U.S.)
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 Score Minimum: 230
  • Number of Pass Attempts on all 3 USMLE Exams: 1
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation
  • Medical Student Transcripts
  • Personal Statement
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate acquired at least 2 months before anticipated residency start date
  • Visa Sponsorship: J1 Visas only – no exceptions
  • FMG applications must be no more than two years removed from graduation of medical school
  • S. Clinical Experience is not mandatory, but encouraged
