Faculty
Department faculty include radiation oncologists, medical physicists and researchers.
Radiation oncologists are physicians with specialized training and expertise in the therapeutic use of radiation. This physician determines the specific treatment plan for each patient, which is discussed with the patient and the family to fully inform them of the benefits and risks associated with the treatment and address questions or concerns conveyed by the patient and his/ her family.
Radiation physicists have a physical science graduate degree and specialized training in the medical uses of radiation. The radiation physicist works closely with radiation oncologists and assists other members of the staff and faculty to develop quality control plans for radiation equipment and procedures to ensure patient safety and comfort.
Radiation oncology researchers collaborate within the department with other clinical faculty members as well as faculty in other departments both locally and nationally. They work to develop new studies and ways to more effectively treat cancer while leaving the rest of the tissue and organs unaffected. Radiation oncology researchers at IU School of Medicine conduct many studies in which qualified patients can participate.
