David R. Diaz, MD

Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry

My primary clinical role is as medical director of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service at IU Health University Hospital.  This tertiary care hospital is both a satisfying and challenging place to provide clinical care and also to teach residents and medical students. The integration of medical and psychiatric skills is critical to the individual trainee and is the direction and future of the profession of psychiatry. I greatly enjoy working with psychiatric residents and medical students in this and other clinical settings.

Regarding education, I am Program Director of our ACGME accredited Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship. This program allows trainees to see a diverse patient population including patients at IU Health University Hospital and the Richard Roudebush VA Medical Center as well as several primary care outpatient facilities. In addition to patient care, fellows produce scholarly work and provide leadership and education to other learners at the various sites of service. Additionally, I direct a medication clinic at Goodman Hall’s Adult Psychiatry Clinic, teaching and learning from 2 psychiatric residents per year. Lastly, the Department is operating an Integrated Care treatment model at IU Health primary care offices with the goal of increasing access to care for patients and providing timely consultation to our primary care colleagues.

I presently serve as President of the Indiana Psychiatric Society as well as its Legislative Representative. I am very dedicated to advocacy efforts at the state and national level through the American Psychiatric Association and the Indiana State Medical Association. I do this not only personally but also make efforts to mentor trainees and others in this area as well. I am a past president of the Indianapolis Medical Society. I am a trustee of the Indiana State Medical Association. I feel that participating in these areas of organized medicine is a good way to give back to the profession and it is my professional duty as well. I am active in several committees with the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
