Medicaid Medical Advisory Cabinet

The Medicaid Medical Advisory Cabinet at IU School of Medicine is an interdisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers who provide research-based policy advice to Indiana’s Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning so its members can make informed policy decisions. Since 2006, the Cabinet has been called on to conduct a wide variety of projects, from large-scale data analyses and in-depth literature reviews to off-the-cuff expert opinions.

Significant Contributions

Advisory cabinet initiatives include a review of the Indiana Medicaid Policy Manual to ensure that existing policies are up-to-date with current medical evidence as well as a randomized control trial to assess cost effectiveness of a Genomind, Inc. genetic screening product, Genecept™, for patients with mental health disorders. The cabinet has also conducted a comprehensive review of more than 600 specific genetic tests to assess which ones fit the general policy criteria and has provided recommendations regarding a pediatric preventive health care periodicity schedule.

Following a review of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment for autism spectrum disorder, the Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning released coverage plans for ABA. Also, an extension of an existing Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality/Rutgers study examining the use of atypical antipsychotics in children led to a publication in the Psychiatry Services journal titled “Second Generation Antipsychotic Use & Cost Trends in Indiana Medicaid Children & Teens (2004-2012)”.
