Apply for the Indiana Pediatric Scientist K12 Award

Applicants to the Indiana Pediatric Scientist Award program should possess a passion for research and demonstrate potential to develop into an independent investigator. Successful applicants are licensed pediatricians with an MD degree who’ve completed postgraduate residency training in pediatrics and are no more than four years past attaining subspecialty board eligibility; exceptions are made for uniformed service and family responsibilities or other circumstances that resulted in a career hiatus. Applicants should identify an approved mentor with extensive research experience.

Application Requirements

Applicants should not currently or previously be a principle investigator on a R01, R29, U01/U10 project; a subproject of a Program Project (P01); center (P50, P60, U54) grant; or individual mentored or non-mentored career development award (e.g., K01, K02, K08, K22, K23, K24, K25, K99). Individuals who are or were principle investigators on NIH Small Grants (such as R03s) or Exploratory/Developmental Grants (such as R21s) may be eligible for this award if they meet the other eligibility requirements.

Individuals who received Pediatric Scientist Development Program (PSDP) K-12 funds are eligible for this program.

While receiving an Indiana Pediatric Scientist Award, awardees may not accept or hold any other award that duplicates the provisions of this career award. However, awardees may remain eligible for other individual mentored career development awards (including K01, K08, K22, K23, K25, K99) at the conclusion of the K12 appointment if additional training is needed to establish research independence. Awardees are strongly encouraged to apply for independent research grant support (such as R01, R21, R03) during the award. Combined support through the Indiana Pediatric Scientist Award and other mentored career development award programs must not exceed six years.

How to Apply

A completed application to the program includes a cover sheet, proof of US citizenship or permanent residency, a one page personal statement that describes career goals and objectives, an 8-10 page research plan, three letters of recommendation, and the applicant’s curricula vitae. In addition, the candidate’s primary mentor must submit a curricula vitae and a letter that details protected research time for the candidate.

Mentors are asked to supply a roster of their past and current post-doctoral and junior faculty trainees. Along with training new translational, physician scientists, the goal of the Department of Pediatrics’ Indiana Pediatric Scientist Award Program RFA is to stimulate multi-disciplinary and translational research that advances laboratory observations to innovative clinical trials or clinically germane observations to investigate at the laboratory/bench. The pediatrics research program at IU School of Medicine is particularly interested in receiving applications from investigators who, with this additional support, are likely to obtain extramural peer-reviewed funding.

Evaluation Process

Selection preference is given to applicants who are most likely to obtain extramural peer-reviewed funding with the help of this award. Candidates are evaluated on demonstrated research potential, commitment to meet the program benchmarks, commitment to a research career, innovation of the proposed research, viability of the research plan, mentor’s commitment, strength of mentor’s relevant experience, and mentor’s training record.

An initial review of applicants is conducted and a decision is made to interview the candidate, decline the application, or hold it for further review pending needed clarifications. Mapping of the research design is required after initial selection. Interviews of applicants are conducted by a selection committee that includes pediatric research faculty and one member of the program’s advisory committee. The selection committee recommends a final selection of candidates to the Program Director/PI, D. Wade Clapp, MD, who chooses the Indiana Pediatric Scientist Award scholars from the recommendations.
