2023-2024 Chief Residents

Katie Mutke

Katie Mutke Headshot

I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. I went to undergrad at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (#GBR) and medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. I initially thought I wanted to go into internal medicine when starting medical school, but then—somewhat surprisingly—found a love for pediatrics after doing two weeks in the PICU during my third-year. I was in a bit of a crisis after that, trying to decide what I wanted to do with my future. That was until I found out about the wonderful specialty of med-peds!

I knew I wanted to go somewhere outside of Nebraska for my med-peds training. IU caught my eye initially due to the size of its program and reputation within Indiana, as well as throughout the whole country. On interview day, I was impressed by the quality of training residents receive at all five hospitals. I was also in awe of the seemingly endless possibilities when it came to academic interests outside of clinical medicine. Lastly, and most importantly, it felt like home and a place that I could thrive.

Now, as a fourth-year resident and chief, I can say with confidence that IU Med-Peds has allowed me to thrive, not only as a resident, but as a person outside of medicine. I have made some of the best friends here, not only in my class, but the classes below me. I have found mentors in multiple areas that have laid a foundation for me to succeed in the future. And most importantly, I have been fully supported as I have made the choice to pursue PICU fellowship (funny how things come full circle)!

Together with Connor (who is, unfortunately, from Iowa and a Hawkeye fan), we hope to make this year one where each resident feels fully supported both professionally and personally. We want each resident to feel that we would go to bat for them in any situation. Also, we hope to push resident education forward with new and exciting additions to our weekly noon conference curriculum!

Good luck this recruitment season! We hope you welcome the chance to see how special IU School of Medicine is!

Raised on a small Iowa dairy farm, I was a lifelong Hawkeye and completed both undergraduate and medical school at the University of Iowa (Go Hawks). There, I was introduced to the world of med-peds through mentorship and research endeavors in cystic fibrosis. Seeing the challenges of transitions of care and value that a career as a med-peds physician offered, I never looked back.

Coming from an institution without formal med-peds training, I was drawn to IU by the welcoming program culture and strong med-peds presence. Over the last three-plus years I’ve found myself working alongside med-peds faculty, fellows, and residents on nearly every rotation, opening countless mentorship opportunities and unmatched professional support. At the program level, Dr. Brady has facilitated a training environment that prioritizes resident wellness and education, going above and beyond the norm to create the best med-peds experience for each of his residents. Here at IU, you will also experience the phenomenal strength of our categorical training programs, offering every degree of patient acuity and complexity to provide you with exceptionally well-rounded training. On a more personal note, IU is a true med-peds family: whether it’s covering a weekend call, babysitting for a co-resident, or even driving each other home after a long shift, our residents are close-knit and incredibly supportive of one another.

As co-chief, my goal is to continue facilitating the outstanding educational and supportive environment of our residency program. As an aspiring clinician educator in the field of adult pulmonary-critical care, I plan to use my passions for medical education, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based medicine to improve the already phenomenal patient care provided by our residents. My co-chief Katie and I look forward to helping our residents become the best physicians and people they can be, and hope we can show you what makes IU great!

Why IU Med-Peds? The program has a family feel. The residents are always inviting and willing to give advice for residency and life. I am also grateful to have the opportunity to work at a county hospital, one of the top children's hospitals, the VA, and a primary care office that accepts patients with little to no insurance. Working at these various clinical sites will give me experience treating a variety of conditions. I also appreciate the number of providers that are Med-Peds trained. They are always available to have conversations, share resources, and discuss career options.

Why IU Med-Peds? I chose IU Med-Peds because of the amazing people and well-established Med-Peds culture that the program offers. During my clinical years, I always felt inspired by the Med-Peds residents and found myself trying to emulate their way of medicine. Whether on the Pediatrics or Internal Medicine side, the Med-Peds residents always thought outside of the box and provided insights that helped keep the team well-rounded. Hobbies: Hanging with my two dogs, gardening, caring for too many houseplants, cooking, and reading

Why IU Med-Peds? Attending medical school here, there was rarely a rotation without a Med-Peds resident or faculty member, which is one of the reasons I chose IU. I worked with Dr. Brady, our program director, on my internal medicine rotation, and he sold me on Med-Peds. Everyone here is supportive, encouraging, and showcase a wide variety of experiences- demonstrating the limitless opportunities we have as a Med-Peds trained physician. We rotate through the five major hospitals downtown, working with diverse patient populations at each hospital. We also have FQHC clinics with our own patient panel, which was another major draw for me. Lastly, IU is unique in that it has the CYACC clinic which is dedicated to preparing children with complex medical conditions in their transition into adulthood.

Plus, there's enough variety in clinical experiences that I feel like I'll actually get a realistic idea of what different practice settings might be like in my career going forward. Lastly, my wife and I (we couples matched) were thrilled to move to a new city that would provide tons to do on our time off while still being manageable to get settled in!

I really wanted a program that prioritized global health- the AMPATH program was outstanding as an opportunity and the hospitals and my continuity clinic both have an incredibly diverse patient population. Why IU Med-Peds? The dedication the residents and program leadership showed on my interview day to ensure I would have what I needed to thrive here! I vividly recall one of our chiefs providing information about the closest national parks and various soccer leagues. It was a pleasant surprise to realize she had read that section of my application and wanted to help me get connected to life in Indianapolis. Furthermore, both Dr. Brady and Dr. Wilson, knowing my passion for research, helped me get connected with the Morris Green Physician Scientist Development Program. These two small acts of kindness spoke volumes to the support I would have as a Med-Peds resident at IU and has only continued since I became a resident.

The variety of clinical sites that we rotate through allow us to experience so many different perspectives of healthcare and allow for us to interact with an incredibly diverse community of people. Why IU Med-Peds? As a medical student at IU, some of the best residents and staff that I worked with were Med-Peds and they inspired me to pursue a career in the field. There is a strong network of support both in and outside of the hospital here. Also, with a large program size everyone knows what Med-Peds is and there is always someone else around in your program. IU also has all the clinical opportunities of a larger city with its statewide catchment area, without the living costs or traffic. I feel that there are opportunities here for mentors and experiences for any path I might decide to pursue after residency. And of course, the people are great too! Why IU Med-Peds? Coming from a school and state with no Med-Peds program, I wanted to go to a program with a large Med-Peds culture that had its own identity. As the largest Med-Peds program in the country, IU has a strong presence and provides so many opportunities for excellent training. I also wanted to explore combined endocrinology, and IU had an elective for combined endo which stood out to me. What really sold me though was the genuine care and interest I received from everybody I met from interview day until now. My colleagues, faculty, and staff all have a good time together which has been my favorite part of IU.

Why IU Med Peds? I was super excited about coming to IU Med-Peds because of the program size and knowing that I would have 13 new friends coming into residency and plenty of support around me! I was also really happy to match into a program that had strong and stable categorical programs. After being here for only a couple of months, I can honestly say that IU Med-Peds is a big family and there are always wonderful people here to support you, help you, and encourage you to keep working hard and be the best version of yourself! Indianapolis is also a super fun city to live in - I live in the suburbs and can get downtown in under 15 minutes, but live equally close to state parks, nature preserves, and green space to provide a great balance!

Why IU Med-Peds? Everyone likes to emphasize the size of our program and I have to agree - it's the perfect size. We're still small enough that I can connect with everyone in my class, but big enough that I get to work with other med-peds people everywhere I am- so far a majority of my attendings, seniors, and co-interns on service have been Med-Peds! This is a place that "does Med-Peds" very well. Indianapolis is also great! Coming from the PNW, I was worried about the flatness of the horizon but quickly realized that what Indiana lacks in mountains, Indianapolis makes up for with cool urban trails, neat neighborhoods, and affordable stuff to do. Overall, this felt like an ideal city to do residency- and more specifically- a fantastic place to do a Med-Peds residency.

Why IU Med-Peds? Having the largest residency class means I ALWAYS have a co-resident free to hang out after a long shift/week and there’s always a senior or graduate who I can seek advice with for my career interests. As a medical podcast junkie, we have awesome weekly conferences that have featured IU Med Peds grads including “Kidney Boy” Dr. Joel Topf and Dr. Chris ”The Chiu Man” Chiu from The Curbsiders. The volume, diversity, and level of care offered from our 5 hospitals on a single campus is, in my opinion, unmatched. Our Global Health and Morris Green programs offer remarkable opportunities. Finally, I love Indy! Incredible food, drink, sports and culture, something fun to do any night of the week, it’s extremely affordable, and there’s no traffic! When evaluating programs in my residency search, I always ended up thinking back to my interview day with IU. That’s how I knew it was my dream program!

WHY IU Med-Peds? The strength of the residents and program leadership made it difficult to imagine going anywhere else-- they set the bar very high! But beyond that, knowing that the internal medicine and pediatrics programs were both independently strong combined with the incredible diversity of patients and pathologies that you get to see given our large catchment area and multiple different hospitals made IU's program really stand out. Now having been a resident in the program, I can say the program size and Med/Peds presence at IU also makes a huge difference; no matter where you are, you are bound to run into another Med-Peds person, and it just makes the residency experience that much better.

Why IU Med-Peds? I had an incredible experience with the Med-Peds residents here at IU while I was a medical student. They were some of the kindest, most driven people I had worked with, and they took a sincere interest in helping and teaching the medical students while providing top notch patient care. I chose IU Med-Peds to become part of that tradition of excellent patient care with a focus on teaching and medical education.

Professional Interests: Most likely pediatric cardiology +/- adult congenital heart disease, but I also love pulmonology and hospitalist medicine, so we will see where life takes me!

Hobbies: Hiking, camping, rock climbing, martial arts, cuddling my geriatric dog, and trying new restaurants with friends

Why IU Med-Peds? The culture, people, and strong Med-Peds presence are what initially drew me to IU Med-Peds, and are the reasons that I am proud to be a resident here. The people at IU, including my co-residents, the program leadership, and the faculty have been absolutely incredible. The supportive culture is so refreshing, and I feel fortunate to have a program director who advocates for and listens to his residents. Residency training can be tough, especially if you moved from out of state, with long work hours and a steep learning curve. Being at a program that feels like home, and having many (14 in each class so plenty of people to hang out with and lean on!) co-residents that feel like family, have been essential in my ability to adjust to residency and a new city/state so quickly. Finally, the med-peds program here is very well-established. At IU, people are excited to learn that you are med-peds, and numerous doors open up since many of our faculty across several specialties and the 5 hospital system are dual-trained as well. I could not be happier with my choice. Now that I am a resident at this program, I can say with 110% confidence that I would choose it again!

How happy I was to find all of that confirmed and more upon arriving, when I was met with such kindness and support. Why IU Med-Peds? IU checked all of the boxes I was looking for in a Med-Peds program -- large size, strong med-peds presence at the institution, a large academic center with the opportunity to rotate through multiple hospitals, and a standalone children's hospital. Having a lot of fellow med-peds residents also provides plenty of opportunities for socializing which has been amazing for somebody not originally from the Midwest. There is also a great Med-Peds presence at IU, which means lots of opportunities for mentorship! Why IU Med-Peds? You really can't beat having such a strong faculty presence of Med-Peds doctors, whether you're on the medicine or pediatrics side. Both faculty and residents alike, are well integrated amongst their peers. I also think IU is unique because there are so many opportunities for research and advocacy that are well integrated into the curriculum. It is great working across multiple hospital systems and seeing Med-Peds residents, fellows and staff wherever I go! Lastly, I feel that I can explore whatever interest I have and pursue it well with IU Med-Peds, whether it be a combined specialty, research, global health, medical education or primary care. Why IU Med-Peds? IU is a powerhouse within the Med-Peds world. There is a strong Med-Peds presence on campus (read: lots of Med-Peds mentors and residents!) with equally strong Medicine and Pediatrics programs. The global health program through AMPATH is nationally-renowned. There's a good number of Spanish speakers (which is something I looked for) who live in Indy. Oh, and it's warmer than Minnesota! Overall, though, the residents are the best thing about IU: Everyone is so friendly and down to earth and always willing to help out or hang out!

From a program standpoint, I was drawn because of the vision of global health centering on sustainable, capacity-building partnerships. Why IU: I love the large program size. There so many co-residents to hang out with, and with the large size comes plenty of resources and educational opportunities (not to mention it increases your chances of working on teams with fellow MP residents!). Another bonus is that Med-Peds is well known within IU so people understand what we do and appreciate our perspective. I was also impressed by the clinical training environment here. Not only do we have strong internal medicine and pediatrics programs to support us, but we also rotate at 5 different hospitals. This allows us to see diverse pathology while preparing us to function in a variety of settings. Most importantly, on my interview day I could tell how genuinely friendly, supportive, and down to earth everyone was. Now that I’m here I can definitely confirm that to be true!

Why IU Med-Peds? A big program means big opportunities and, more importantly, a big med-peds family! IU offered everything that I was looking for in a program- it's a residency at a public university where we rotate at multiple hospitals, including a large children's hospital, to serve diverse, vulnerable patient populations from across the state. My co-interns and the other residents are also unbelievably fun to work and hang out with. There's always a group activity happening to join in on to maintain a healthy social life during residency. Why IU Med-Peds? I absolutely love the size of the Med-Peds classes here at IU. It's what I was looking for in a program, and the strength of the training the residents receive is incredible. The residents are well-supported on both sides and the program is very readily there to help us pursue whatever our career goals may be. I was looking for a program that would offer a very diverse and robust clinical experience by seeing a wide array of pathology. The camaraderie between the residents (and with their categorical counterparts) was very important to me in a program and I saw this as a medical student here. I'm happy to say that it's the same case for my class!

Additionally, I felt like the program offered an equality strong training and balance in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics that would allow me to develop in primary care, general hospitalist medicine, and subspecialty care. Why IU: I am so happy I matched at IU for several reasons. First, of course, is the people. The Med-Peds residents I met during medical school were genuine, hardworking, and kind. And that only became more obvious as I met more of them throughout interview season. Second, the diversity of clinical training sites was very important to me as I was looking at different programs. As IU Med-Peds residents, we rotate at several different hospitals including the VA, the county safety net hospital, and tertiary and quaternary referral centers. The catchment area of these hospitals is massive — the entire state of Indiana — so we have the opportunity to see and manage a wide variety of pathology. Lastly, Indianapolis is a fun place to live! It is a younger, growing city with plenty of fun things to do within the city, and plenty of nature to explore within just a short drive. I am so glad to be staying here at IU for residency!

Residency Reflection: In the time I've been here, the program reaffirms the reasons I chose IU initially: the culture, the people, the mentorship, and the city. As a large academic institution with strong categorical departments, you have opportunity to explore your interests and find excellent mentors. I am interested in global health and got to spend two months doing clinical rotations in Eldoret, Kenya- through the AMPATH program- which was a unique and unforgettable experience! Coming from Houston, I have appreciated being in a city that still has plenty of big city amenities but is affordable and has significantly less traffic.

Residency Reflection: Indiana University was a great place to undergo residency training. Your Med-Peds co-residents will become some of your closest friends and help you get through the long hours! Looking back on the training, I think the variety of medicine/pathology gave us a foundation that allowed us to grow into confident residents and future fellows & attendings. The most telling and representative thing I can say about our program is that I respect each of my co-residents and know that I have grown/learned from being around them and I think that is at least in part a product of our environment! Furthermore, being from North Carolina, it was easy to move to Indy with my wife and goldendoodle and enjoy the off time we have!

Hobbies: Trying new restaurants and breweries with friends, cooking, various sports (soccer and flag football are my favorite)

Residency ReflectionThroughout my three years here at IU, I can honestly say that the things that drew me to IU initially during my interview have continued to support my decision every day. With the large academic center and multiple hospitals that we rotate through, we see a wide variety of pathologies ranging from the common everyday diagnoses to the “zebras” we will all only probably see once in a lifetime. This has helped me to build confidence in managing anything I might be faced with after residency. As the largest Med-Peds program in the country, our program has a strong presence within both the categorical Medicine and Pediatrics departments. You will be hard pressed to be on a rotation where you are not rotating with a fellow Med-Peds co-resident or have an attending who is Med-Peds trained.

When I initially interviewed with IU, the biggest and most striking aspect I noticed was the people. And over these past 3 years, that observation has been confirmed, as I have made life-long friends and memories during my time at IU. I can truly say that I would not be the doctor I am today without my fellow co-residents. They teach me and push me to be a better doctor everyday as well as provide support for me outside of work, and for that I am so grateful and proud to be a part of this residency program.

Residency Reflection: I remember 3 things from my IU interview day: the culture, the people, and the famous St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail. While the latter is now hard to appreciate during virtual interviews, the first two aspects have made choosing IU Med-Peds for residency one of the best decisions of my life. Over the last 3 years I have been immersed in some of the best clinical training in both internal medicine and pediatrics, all while surrounded by best friends. The family environment our leadership has created speaks for itself, as you will find Med-Peds faculty and fellows who have planted their roots at IU at nearly every turn. This not only makes your residency experience enjoyable, but it creates endless career and mentorship opportunities—no matter how broad or narrow your interests, there is someone to guide you along the way. Lastly, Indianapolis has everything you could want from a big city, without the traffic. Altogether, IU Med-Peds is an incredible place to train, and I am proud to call it my home.

Residency Reflection: I chose IU for residency due to the Med-Peds presence and the people I met on my interview day. The size of the program makes it easy to find mentors who have a Med-Peds background and are practicing whichever field of medicine you’re interested in. While initially I was intimidated by the number of hospitals we train at, I now feel prepared to practice in different types of hospitals and use several EMRs. Hobbies: I'm a huge foodie and have tried over 12 new restaurants in my first 1.5 months here (hoping to try at least one new restaurant every 2 weeks)! Indianapolis offers multiple restaurant options for almost every cuisine, which is a huge perk (especially great for Riley hospitalist night shifts). I also love board games and exploring nature. There are some great trails not too far from the city, and the canal area in downtown Indianapolis is beautiful for a quick scenic walk after work or on days off.

Residency Reflection: If you are passionate about any area of medicine, don't be afraid to reach out to potential mentors early! There are so many amazing people at IU who would be interested in helping you pursue your career goals, even if you change your mind about your areas of interest at the last minute. This is especially true of the people in the Med-Peds program. Residency ReflectionMy favorite part about the IU Med-Peds program is the people. During my interview day it was clear to me that the residents are friends outside of the hospital and have a close relationship. Since I have begun my training at IU I have been welcomed into the Med-Peds family and now I look forward to working with my friends every day.

The size of the program at IU is a benefit as we have our own identity but still seamlessly integrate with our categorical colleagues. Med-Peds also has a huge presence within the IU health system, which is an asset as there is a system in place to support residents with whatever their goal may be. Indianapolis is also a great town to live in with lots of running trails, it is very bike-friendly, and the nightlife scene has something for everyone.

At IU I have been provided with the tools to develop and grow as a physician. I am excited to pursue the next stage of my training as a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellow.

Residency Reflection:The HUGE Med-Peds presence at IU has made my residency experience unique and unforgettable. My best memories are the times where that presence has been on display: covering nights at our children's hospital when there are seven Med-Peds seniors on call together; the numerous rotations that my attendings have all been Med-Peds trained; the ability to find Med-Peds mentors in my disparate and changing interests no matter how unorthodox; or the many weddings or nights out in Indy where so many of my classmates got to spend time together.

Add that Med-Peds presence to the learning experiences that come from a nationally renowned free-standing children's hospital, a behemoth adult academic medical center, and IU's leadership of an international global health consortium- and it is easy to see why IU is a great place to train.

Why IU? I chose IU Med-Peds for a number of reasons. Firstly, coming from a medical school without a Med-Peds program, I was blown away by how strong of a presence Med-Peds has within the community here. The diversity of the patient population was also a very strong draw for me. As someone who had never lived in Indiana before, I was surprised just how multi-cultural of a city Indianapolis is and getting to treat patients from a variety of different backgrounds has been incredibly fulfilling! What's more, the wide array of clinical environments we get to work in and the large catchment area that our hospitals cover offers unparalleled clinical diversity as well. Coming to IU, I knew I would get exceptional training regardless of what type of career I wanted to pursue and that I would be able to do so in a city, community, and program that provided the best opportunities and support for me and my family.
