Ryan E. Fitzgerald, MD

Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery

Bio

Thanks in part to a pediatrician he loved visiting while he was growing up, Ryan Fitzgerald, MD, was 4 years old when he first started telling people he was going to be a doctor. And over the years, his dream morphed and grew but never completely changed.

A native of central Illinois, Fitzgerald attended medical school at the University of Illinois thinking he’d open a family practice near his hometown one day. But in the course of his training he met an orthopaedic surgeon who, instead, inspired him to pursue the same specialty.

Fitzgerald is now an assistant professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. He specializes in the care of pediatric patients and works primarily from Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.

Fitzgerald enjoys teaching young doctors because his students often challenge him as he challenges them. The constant questioning and curiosity of trainees helps him to perfect his own understanding of medical practices and procedures.

He hopes to inspire fellows, residents and medical students to be the best doctors they can be because in them lies the future of orthopaedic surgery.
