Clinical Experience

Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery fellows rotate for four months each with Andrew Parr, MD, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis; with Leonard Buller, MD, and Kevin Sonn, MD, at IU Health Saxony Hospital in Fishers; and with Michael Meneghini, MD, at Union Health Hospital in Terre Haute.

While completing rotations in Indianapolis and Fishers, fellows will also have the opportunity to see patients at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Under the supervision of Meneghini or Parr throughout the fellowship year, fellows are responsible for inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal care with an emphasis on evidence-based decision making. Training includes didactic lectures, case presentation, critical review of peer-reviewed journals, weekly indications conferences and an extensive surgical and office experience with various faculty surgeons. The opportunity for clinical and basic science research is offered and encouraged throughout the fellowship.

Professional Development

Although not mandatory, hip and knee replacement surgery fellows are encouraged to attend the annual American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons meeting held each year in Dallas, Texas, as well as other educational courses focused on hip and knee reconstruction, including the annual Contemporary Approaches to Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction course hosted at IU Health Saxony Hospital. In addition, weekly conferences are held on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the annual Garceau Wray Lectureship represents the education conference at the time of resident and fellow graduation. Attendance at monthly IU School of Medicine Lower Extremity and Adult Reconstruction (LEAR) Journal Club, Quarterly Cadaver Lab and Quarterly Indiana Statewide Joint Council is expected. Fellows in this program are required to present a research project complete with data analysis and conclusion, of high-quality methodology and content with subsequent submission to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Several social events occur throughout the academic year in which fellows are encouraged to attend.

Admissions

All applicants for the Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery Fellowship at IU School of Medicine must apply for open positions exclusively through the San Francisco Match.
