Bio

Dr. Mackay is the founding director of Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.  He is driven by his passion for compassionate patient care, training the rising generation of physicians, and advancing the frontiers of academic medicine.

After completing medical school at the University of Virginia, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society, he completed neurology residency training at Harvard Medical School at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  He then completed a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship with mentors Drs. Nancy Newman and Valerie Biousse at Emory University in Atlanta.

After years of no neuro-ophthalmology service at IU, he founded IUSM's Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic on his arrival in 2014.  The clinical volume has increased tremendously over time, with Dr. Mackay having seen more than 8,000 new neuro-ophthalmology patients since then.  In addition to his busy outpatient clinical practice, he also serves as an attending neurologist on the inpatient Neurology consult service at Eskenazi Hospital.  He holds joint appointments in the departments of Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Neurosurgery, where he serves as an Associate Professor.

Dr. Mackay was named Professor of the Year in 2016 and Lecturer of the Year in 2022 by the graduating IU Ophthalmology Residency class and was one of four clinical IUSM faculty members inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2019, the same society that honored him as a student 10 years prior.  As an officer of the Indiana Neurological Society since 2018, he has served the neurologists of Indiana in various capacities, including his current service as Vice President.  He was awarded the 2024 Merit Award by the North-American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society for outstanding service.

As an expression of his passion for education, he serves as the Statewide Assistant Neurology Clerkship Director for IUSM, the largest medical school in the country, and created and serves as the course director for the Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology Elective for fourth-year medical students.

He helped create a fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology at IUSM, which will welcome its first fellow in July 2024, and Dr. Mackay will serve as Fellowship Director.

He has been invited to speak at regional, national, and international conferences on neurology and neuro-ophthalmology subjects and has been an author on dozens of peer-reviewed neurology and neuro-ophthalmology publications.  Dr. Mackay also teaches in courses for the American Academy of Neurology.

He stays even busier at home with his wife and eight young children, who are the joy of his life.  He enjoys spending time with them, serving in his church, and working on cars.
