Charles W. Yates, MD

Charles Yates, MD, joined Indiana University School of Medicine faculty in 2010. Board-certified in both otolaryngology and neurotology, Dr. Yates provides medical and surgical care for hearing loss, including cochlear implant surgery in children and adults, balance disorders and skull base surgery. 

Dr. Yates pursues research interests in Neurofibromatosis type 2. The goal of this research is to find a medical treatment for patients with tumors of the skull base, especially in order to preserve hearing, balance, and facial nerve function. The research involves understanding the cellular machinery that changes normal cells into tumors and how changes in these conditions may be able to shrink tumors. As an assistant professor of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery at IU School of Medicine, Dr. Yates also trains residents and medical students. He directs the Otolaryngology Medical Student Clerkship Program. 

Dr. Yates received his medical degree and residency in otolaryngology from IU School of Medicine. He then received his neurotology fellowship from The Ohio State University School of Medicine. He has been honored to receive the Psi Iota Psi professorship to further pursue the research of hearing preservation and rehabilitation. Dr. Yates has received the IU Trustees Teaching Award twice. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; a fellow in the American Neurotological Society; and a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Yates enjoys time with his family, reading and playing the guitar.
