The Department of Family Medicine at IU School of Medicine regularly contributes exciting advances to this field of medicine. Faculty, staff and students in in this department are focused on the research and study of family medicine as well as the training of future practitioners through education programs and engaging local events. Lunch & Learn: Passport to Wellness

Please join us on Thursday, September 19th from 12:30 – 2:00pm for a healthy lunch and interactive wellness educational session. The lunch and learn session will be facilitated by John Shepard, RN. John is an ICU nurse who specializes as a Certified Mindfulness Instructor, working with nurses, physicians, clinicians and non-clinical staff in embedding mindful approaches and practices in the healthcare setting to cultivate clarity, compassion and calm. In 2017, he was awarded the National Magnet Nurse of the Year for bringing mindfulness and meditation to the clinical setting. We will also have four Passport to Wellness breakout sessions for participants to choose from.

The breakout session options will be:

  • Eat Chocolate, Be Healthy: Steven Lalevich, RD will lead an interactive session discussing the health benefits of chocolate and what to look for when purchasing. Participants will sample a variety of dark chocolates while practicing mindful eating.
  • Guided Meditation Session: Diana Summanwar, MD of the IU Methodist Family Medicine Residency will lead a guided session with the goal to enhance mental and emotional well-being through meditation, connect to the inner self, and discover a new outlook on living. This is a sit-down, guided meditation session.
  • Mindfulness in the Workplace: Owners of NapTown Fitness, Peter and Shannon Brasovan will demonstrate practicing mindfulness in the workplace and how to prepare for the “unexpected”. During the session, participants will be led through a variety of poses and breathing exercises.
  • Workstation Workouts: Mary Yoke, PhD, FACSM, MA, MM will lead this experiential session providing you with multiple ideas to get moving right at your desk. You will learn some feel-good moves and some movement “snacks” that will decrease stiffness and fatigue with the potential to increase positivity and productivity in the workplace.

45th Anniversary Town Hall and Reception

As part of its year of celebrations, the Department of Family Medicine will host a cocktail reception at Goodman Hall on Thursday, October 24th from 4:30 – 6:00pm. A video, featuring former and current faculty and staff, will be presented which will highlight the milestones that were achieved over the past 45 years. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Medical Miles 5K Run & Fun Walk

The Department of Family Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, is celebrating its 45th anniversary throughout the upcoming year. It will be a year filled with exciting, informative and educational events, one of which will be our first ever Medical Miles 5K Run & Fun Walk. The Medical Miles 5K Run & Fun Walk will take place on Saturday, November 2nd from 9:00 – 11:00am at the Indianapolis downtown canal. Portions of the proceeds will support the medical student outreach clinic affiliated with the Department of Family Medicine. Please share this event with your colleagues, family and friends.
