Precepting Performance Improvement Program

The Department of Family Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine is an approved sponsor for the American Board of Family Medicine Precepting Performance Improvement Program.

IU School of Medicine is one of only 55 approved medical schools in the United States who are partnering with the American Board of Family Medicine on this new program. Participation in the program is available to current appointed School of Medicine precepting faculty. It represents a valuable opportunity to prospective faculty who may be interested in signing up to be precepting faculty with the Department of Family Medicine.

Participation Benefits

The Precepting Performance Improvement Program allows physicians to receive performance improvement activity credits for meaningful participation in customized performance improvement projects while meeting the required 180 hours of 1:1 precepting.

Requirements

To receive American Board of Family Medicine Precepting Performance Improvement Program credits, the teaching physician must meaningfully participate by completing the following tasks:

  • Complete an attestation appropriate to the teaching physician’s work setting.
  • Complete at least 180 1:1 contact hours with a medical student.
  • Review project data, including the pre-and post-data from the learner in accordance with IU School of Medicine student evaluations.

In order to qualify for these free Continuing Medical Education credits toward board recertification, preceptors only need to precept two medical students per academic year. Not only is this free, but the Department of Family Medicine provides a portfolio manager to assist with the qualifying recertification requirements. This valuable faculty perk is only available to physicians with a current Indiana University School of Medicine faculty appointment.
