Emergency Medicine

For over 50 years, the Department of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine has served our patients and our communities. It is a promise we renew every day and one that has never been broken. We care for our patients and we care for each other. We teach, we heal, and we work to improve the care we deliver. It is a simple message but one that defines the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Our vision

To improve the health and well-being of every life entrusted to us and every community we serve.

Our mission

Care for others like they are family, teach the way our favorite teachers taught us, boldly innovate to improve the care we deliver, and develop leaders who transform emergency medicine.

We will advance the mission by:

  • Training the next generation of physicians and advanced practice providers

  • Ensuring justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Achieving gender equity and parity

  • Ensuring our teams thrive by focusing on wellness and mental health

  • Advance the specialty through discovery, innovation, and knowledge creation

  • Set the standard for emergency care in the United States

Clinical Care

Taking care of patients and our communities is the most important thing we do. The department staffs ten emergency departments throughout Indiana including three level 1 trauma centers, the primary teaching institutions for the department.

Emergency Medicine Residency Programs

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers two residency programs: a general emergency medicine residency (PGY 1-3) and combined emergency medicine and pediatrics program (PGY 1-5). The department’s academic health centers include two level one adult trauma centers, Methodist and Eskenazi, and the state's only level one children's trauma center at Riley Hospital for Children. Located in downtown Indianapolis, our rich clinical environment ensures an exceptional educational and training opportunity. Our goal is to train outstanding physicians who will lead the specialty in the future.
