Bio

An Ohio native, Tyler was born and raised in the bustling metropolis of Shelby, where he was studying the feasibility of removing all 4-way stops from traffic patterns as the congestion of farming equipment is not dense enough to require them.  After graduation, he attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH, where he was a defensive tackle for the Tiger football team.  Not surprisingly, his lack of athletic prowess at this level of collegiate athletics allowed him plenty of time to major in chemistry and discover that he is not as smooth in social interactions as he initially thought.  As with the majority of his life experiences, he stumbled into athletic training as a work-study job, which proved that life behind a lab bench would not be as fulfilling as direct contact with people, and led him to pursue other career goals.  Concurrently, an injury opened his eyes to the possibility of medicine as a long term career. He was fortunate enough to attend the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, graduating in 2002.  Since then, Tyler has become a Hoosier (although he will always remain a Buckeye at heart) and completed his residency at the IU School of Medicine emergency medicine residency in 2005.  In 2012, Tyler married his lovely wife Lisa, finding a match for which he waited his whole life.  His life now includes two additional bosses, his daughters Claire and Quinn.  To confirm reports, they do have Tyler wrapped around their little fingers.

Since graduation, Tyler has spent his first five years in a rapidly growing community based practice in Avon, IN, “honing” his practice and developing new and different perspectives regarding patient care outside of the “ivory towers” of residency and academic health centers.  However, the urge to teach brought him back to Eskenazi Memorial Hospital (now Eskenazi Health), which he has called home ever since. Although he has a wide variety of interests, he currently is most involved in developing a longitudinal difficult airway curriculum for the residency, participating in the improvement of trauma care and critical care initiatives at Eskenazi, and improving departmental and hospital operations.  He is currently the medical director for the Eskenazi emergency department, and continues to be humbled by the quality, compassion, and work ethic of his colleagues.  Tyler also works with IndyCar as a track physician for the Safety Team, and is active in simulation education for emergency medicine as well as the department of pediatrics.
