Residents of the Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics programs at IU School of Medicine benefit from training with accomplished faculty who provide excellent patient care and publish research regularly in peer-reviewed biomedical journals. Graduates of these residency programs demonstrate excellence in the field of emergency medicine and are prepared for a broad range of careers.

Chief Residents

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Spent 18 years in traditional and mixed martial arts, earned 2 black belts and a world championship in kickboxing at the US Open. Have 2 kiddos and one on the way. Love to cook… just don’t know how.

Fun Fact: Selling hot dogs at the flea market in Florida over the summer in a tin hut… sweated out many pounds of bitter tears that year.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine? My hometown is Fort Wayne Indiana so that was a big draw, but the big draw of the program was the focus on the development of a decades long career, and the ability to explore those interests with the tracks that have been established.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: I loved the people I worked with when I rotated through the department. Everyone was so easy to get along with, and it really helped the shift to fly by. Also, Indy is such a great city. There’s always something going on or something new to try.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: I bought a house at the start of intern year and have had a lot of fun updating and working on it. I also like to try new restaurants and breweries around Indy.

Fun Fact: I got pulled on stage in Las Vegas to get hypnotized. It didn’t work, but I didn’t want to be the jerk who let the audience know it wasn’t real. So I ended up having to lip syncing Shania Twain on stage as instructed under my “hypnosis” in front of a couple hundred people.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: Absolutely the people. IUSM EM is a big, (sometimes) loud, happy family full of so many brilliant, talented people. I’m incredibly grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to learn from all of them.

Fun Fact: I once won $100 for eating 17.5 Krispy Kreme donuts in 8 minutes. My parents were very proud.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: World renowned reputation for excellent EM training in a wide variety of settings, offering care to a huge number of people in need. I also visited Indy a bunch of times having lived in Chicago and plain and simply loved the city.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Basketball, Video Games, Outdoor Activities, Cornhole

Fun Fact: I am a former high school chemistry teacher, a basketball coach, and then business consultant. All great times. But some say my job as a turkey salesman molded me into the man I am today.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: IU offered a unique blend of academic and community experiences, and I felt like this would prepare me for whatever I end up doing within the field of Emergency Medicine. I also really liked the 51/49 mantra. The residents seemed to be really invested in the program. They shared the responsibility of working to constantly improve it, and I felt like that was really important.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Running, biking, bluegrass and beating Steve Wipprecht in tennis.

Fun Fact: I was the recipient of the “world’s largest christmas stocking.” It was so big we had to transport it in the bed of a pick-up truck, because it wouldn’t fit in our car.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: I felt like I was part of the family from the minute I attended the pre-interview dinner. The faculty were personable and welcoming – it truly felt like home from day one!

Fun Fact: I met Amitabh Bachchan, a Bollywood movie star – all of the pictures taken are of me explaining to him that he is not correctly addressing the autograph.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: The level of training, acuity, volume, responsibility, and autonomy here is unparalleled. Further, the faculty, both in the ED and off service are dedicated to our education which makes for a great experience. Lastly, and probably most importantly, the people that make up our program are amazing!

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Spending time with my wife, Kate, and my son T-bone (Teddy). We enjoy playing with our 2 dogs, hiking, golfing, ultimate frisbee, brewing beer, as well as traveling.

Fun Fact: My wife and I are obsessed with The Office and my Dwight Schrute bobblehead is the only thing on display on my fireplace mantle.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine: I did an away rotation at IUSM as a 4th year medical student and was sold! Pretty much boils down to excellent EM exposure with lots of critical care experiences throughout, great staff and learning environment, and a fun family style residency program. Not to mention Indy is large-sized Midwestern city with lots of activities but also within a few hours drive of outdoor adventures.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine? This residency program felt like a family more than any other program I visited while on the interview trail. This place really is amazing and the people are even better….plus they have the best family benefits of any other program in the country.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: I have the best family in the world. My wife, Amy, is a 6th grade teacher and an absolute rock-star. My kids, Hayla, Emily, Micah, and Luke are amazing as well and keep us on our toes and sometimes a little busier than we would like to be. I am a pilot and love flying, but medical school and residency seemingly get in the way of having the time to fly. Hobbies besides hanging out with my kids and flying basically include getting projects done for my wife who thinks she is Joanna Gaines!

Fun Fact: I worked construction in high school and started smoking Marlboro cigarettes, because that was the cool thing to do while working construction. I got a major buzz from my first “smoke” and almost fell off the second story before the walls were put up. Stopped smoking shortly after!

Hobbies and Personal Interests: I love most things outdoors/active. I enjoy hiking, water skiing, wake surfing, snow skiing, biking, running, slacklining, frisbee, and surfing. However, most of all, I love spending time with my wife and three kids.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine? On paper, IUSM EM was a dream program from the start of the application process. It was a large volume, well respected program with the benefits of multiple trauma centers and a dedicated children’s hospital, and fantastic ICU training. When I came here for interviews, I was impressed by the down to earth, family atmosphere of the program, and the pride that faculty took in our education. It felt like home, and I knew I would receive a world class education. Hard to ask for more.

Why IU School of Medicine, Emergency Medicine? The pediatric training here is excellent and I loved the teaching I got here while on my away. Since being here I’ve loved the family feel to the program, and Indianapolis has been a great city to explore.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Hiking, hanging out with my dog, board games, Pittsburgh sports teams.

Fun Fact: I was a Sandwich Artist for Subway in High School, and I secretly love that subway smell. Also I wish I would have taken some sweet onion sauce with me when I left.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: I spend a solid majority of my free time playing frisbee with my 3-legged dog and trying not to kill the ridiculous number of plants I have accumulated. I like yoga, casual bike riding and all kinds of cooking!
