Current Residents

Residents of the IU School of Medicine Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics programs benefit from training with accomplished faculty who provide excellent patient care and publish research regularly in peer-reviewed biomedical journals. Graduates of these residency programs demonstrate excellence in the field of emergency medicine and are prepared for a broad range of careers.

Chief Residents

Chief Residents work as a team to provide leadership and support to residents in the IU School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine program. They serve as key mentors and advocates for the residents and set a positive tone for the residency program.

PGY-5 (Emergency Medicine / Pediatrics)

Dr. Knutson is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. She earned her MD from Creighton University School of Medicine. Her professional interests are pediatric emergency medicine, wilderness medicine, international medicine and EMS. Her hobbies include soccer, running, snowboarding, rock climbing, camping, the lakes, vegetarian food, traveling, painting, baking and talking about how much she loves Colorado!

Dr. Reed is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. She earned her MD from IU School of Medicine. Her professional interests are pediatric emergency medicine, general pediatrics, patient advocacy, rural medicine, international medicine and EMS. Her hobbies include painting, sketching, anything outdoors, traveling, trying new foods and activities, movies (and quoting movies), wine-tasting and spending time with friends and family.

PGY-3 (Emergency Medicine)

Dr. Blickendorf is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her professional interests are ultrasound and medical education. Her hobbies include running, cycling, baking and exploring downtown Indianapolis. Her favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at the IU School of Medicine are the people and the classmates. “Being around such a great group of people makes even the challenging days enjoyable. I love being inspired by those around me”.

Dr. Connelly is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from SUNY Upstate Medical University. His professional interests are administration and operations. His hobbies include lacrosse, basketball, action movies and trying new foods.

Dr. DiAntonio-Swartzel an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her professional interests are ultrasound, EMS and critical care. Her hobbies include running, soccer, golfing, fishing, learning to ski, swimming, watching movies and TV, trying new restaurants and spending time with her husband, cat and family.

Dr. Elliot is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from IU School of Medicine. His professional interests are EMS and Administration/Operations. His hobbies include playing and watching sports (especially football), trying out new local microbrews and being outdoors (hiking, hunting and fishing). His favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at the IU School of Medicine are the people and the location. “There is always someone willing to lend a hand, both clinically and outside of the hospital,” he says. “Indianapolis is an amazing city that has all the amenities of a major metropolitan city with a welcoming, Midwestern atmosphere.”

Dr. Hays is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. He earned his MD from Creighton University School of Medicine.

Dr. Saunders an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician.

PGY-3

Dr. Grigsby is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Dr. Rayburn is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. He earned his MD from the American University of the Caribbean and his MPH from the University of South Florida.

PGY-2

Dr. Martin is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. His professional interests are NPR, global health, free clinics, wilderness medicine and medical Spanish. His hobbies include most sports, swimming, camping, piloting, reading fiction and anything Disney. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the program for EM and Pediatrics. “Indianapolis is affordable, has lots of breweries and good food nearby, and an international airport for travel,” he says. “Most importantly, the residency is like family here.”

Dr. Wagner is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School. Her professional interests are in medical Spanish, ultrasound and community health and advocacy. Her hobbies include raising chickens, finding old furniture, cooking, knitting, pottery, power tools, touring Indianapolis’ breweries and napping. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the “great Midwest town with a very close-knit residency program and great faculty. I love my classmates!”

PGY-1

Dr. Petras is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Irwin is an emergency medicine and pediatrics resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

PGY-3

Dr. Beard is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from IU School of Medicine. His professional interests are EMS and ultrasound.

Dr. DiOrio is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Rush Medical College. Her professional interests include advocacy, international medicine, injury prevention and disaster medicine. Her hobbies include horseback riding, exploring the outdoors with her dog, keeping up with her saltwater aquarium, jigsaw puzzles and gluten-free eating.

Dr. Duncan is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Kentucky. His professional interests are in ultrasound, critical care and wilderness medicine. His hobbies include rock climbing, running, mountain biking, cooking and general adventuring. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the family atmosphere. “It was a pretty seamless transition moving here from out of state,” he says. “Everyone is super helpful and prides themselves on treating each other like family. This mentality is fostered and encouraged by the program directors and faculty, which is both outstanding and rare.”

Dr. Dunstone is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. His professional interests are in global health, wilderness medicine and EMS. His hobbies include rugby, snowboarding, hiking, soccer, traveling, sporting clays and range shooting, and tennis. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the program’s size, strength and resources. “The residency program is simply spectacular and I appreciate the immense focus the program directors and faculty place on resident wellness,” he says. “Being part of a happy and cohesive residency family makes emergency medicine training much more enjoyable.”

Dr. Heimberg is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Illinois in Chicago. His professional interests are in medical education and ultrasound. His hobbies include ultimate Frisbee, softball, most sports, hiking and travel. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the people. “The people here are exceptional, they support and challenge you every day.”

Dr. Holland is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Nevada. His professional interests are in EMS, medical education, event medicine, injury prevention and public health. His hobbies include anything outdoors, cooking/grilling, baseball, running, biking, Frisbee, hiking, dog parks, fishing, yard games, fixing stuff, movies and spending time with his wife Kathleen, a pediatrics resident, and their two dogs. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the family atmosphere. “The Department of Emergency Medicine has amazing faculty members who are friendly and love to teach,” he says. “You work closely with emergency medicine leaders and you’ll find opportunities in every aspect of the field.”

Dr. Jackson is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from the Medical College of South Carolina. Her hobbies include ballet, flag football, international medicine, paddle boarding, running, singing, soccer, traveling, trying new food, tubing, volleyball and volunteering.

Dr. Kanitz is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University Of Toledo College of Medicine. His professional interests are in the use of ultrasound in the ED and exploring new research. His hobbies include cooking, running, kayaking and sports. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the exceptionally large program, incredible faculty and a diverse patient population.

Dr. Manghelli is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her professional interests are in EMS, critical care, mass gathering and academics. Her hobbies include Purdue sports, Colts, running (road and trail), wine tasting, cooking and shopping. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the academic challenge. “IU will push you,” she says. “You are expected to bring something to the table and make a difference.”

Dr. McKee is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Miller is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Texas A&M University. His professional interests are in EMS, mass gathering medicine, and disaster medicine. His hobbies include hiking, camping, traveling, Texas A&M football, cooking, checking out new restaurants and spending time with his wife and their dog. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the close-knit family of faculty and residents. Also, he says “the three high volume/ acuity hospitals allow an amazing diversity of clinical experiences, emphasis on critical care, and the dedicated tracks allowing you to develop your niche in emergency medicine.”

Dr. Patel is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine. His professional interests are in critical care, EMS and simulation. His hobbies include anything outdoors, trying new foods, Colts football and Pacers basketball. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the people. “The location is excellent and there is a ton of different pathology, but the people make the program, and the people here are awesome,” he says.

Dr. Schultz is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Wayne State University School of Medicine. His professional interests are in ultrasound, EMS and mass gathering medicine. His hobbies include golf, B1G football and basketball, and spending time with family and co-residents. His favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are the enthusiastic staff and co-residents, diverse patient population and pathology.

Dr. Valentine is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Rocky Vista University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Her professional interests are in EMS, disaster medicine and wilderness medicine. Her hobbies include photography, trail running, hiking and coffee. Her favorite aspects about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are the “amazing people to work with, unparalleled prehospital experience and clinical exposure.”

Dr. Whitmore is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His professional interests are in EMS and disaster medicine. His hobbies include being outdoors, ACC Basketball, food, hanging out with family and friends, and playing with his dog. His favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are the “high volume, high acuity, diverse patient population; excellent program leadership; and most importantly the camaraderie between the all residents and the faculty.”

Dr. Bariteau is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His professional interests are in ED critical care. His hobbies include mixed and traditional martial arts, world championship kickboxing and learning how to cook. He says his favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are the “incredible patient volume, awesome staff and co-residents and location in a big city that feels manageable and affordable.”

Dr. Cao is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Capito is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Chernoby is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Florida College of Medicine. His professional interests are in critical care and EMR. His hobbies include traveling, gardening and eventually having a dog and a rabbit. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the “supportive environment fostered by the faculty and the residency as a whole.”

Dr. Hunt is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Ortiz is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Her professional interests are in medical education and toxicology. Her hobbies include soccer, kickboxing, reading, watching Detroit sports, playing with her dog, being with her husband and friends, wine tasting and baking. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the family environment. “The family feel really sold it for me, and the faculty are amazing!” she says. “It’s laid back with enough clinical volume and variety to help us become fantastic emergency physicians.”

Dr. Jackson is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Liao is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of California Davis School of Medicine. His professional interests are in EMS disaster preparedness and CPR/defibrillation. His hobbies include science fiction novels and movies. He says his favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the overall experience of IU. “They have fantastic EMS and disaster medicine experiences, great residents and an excellent support staff.”

Dr. Lommel is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her DO from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. McGee is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. His professional interests are in ultrasound, operations and logistics. His hobbies include comic books, listening to vinyl records and cooking. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the focus on career development. “The biggest draw of the program was the focus on the development of a decades-long career, and the ability to explore those interests with the established tracks.”

Dr. Pearson is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Her professional interests are in pediatrics, ultrasound and global health. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, eating and playing with her dog, Bailey. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the overall experience. “It’s strong pediatric training, amazing people, a large alumni network and a solid program reputation that will help me find my dream job in any region of the country.”

Dr. Pettigrew is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

Dr. Slubowski is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Creighton University School of Medicine.

Dr. Soley is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Stewart is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Thinnes is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Tune is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Dr. Van Ryzin is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Her professional interests are in ICU and palliative care. Her hobbies include traveling internationally, road tripping, volcano hiking and 5k swims. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the staff. “From a career-trajectory perspective, they are great people to train and challenge me as a resident.”

Dr. Brakora is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Byrd is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine. Her hobbies include working on her house and trying new restaurants and breweries around Indianapolis. Her favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are the people and location. “I loved the people I worked with when I rotated through the department,” she says. “Everyone was so easy to get along with, and Indianapolis is such a great city. There’s always something happening or something new to try.”

Dr. Courtney is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from St. George’s University School of Medicine.

Dr. Falvo is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Her professional interests are in medical student education and communication. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the people. “IUSM EM is a big, (sometimes) loud, happy family full of so many brilliant, talented people,” she says. “I’m incredibly grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to learn from all of them.”

Dr. Holt is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. His professional interests are in medical education and critical care. His hobbies include basketball, video games, outdoor activities and cornhole. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are its reputation and location. “They have a world-renowned reputation for excellent emergency medicine training in a wide variety of settings, offering care to a huge number of people in need,” he says. “I also visited Indy several times, having lived in Chicago, and plain and simple: I loved the city.”

Dr. Lupov is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Morgan is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. His professional interests are in clinical informatics, systems operations and quality improvement. His hobbies include running, biking, bluegrass and beating (fellow resident) Steve Wipprecht in tennis. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the experience. “IU offered a unique blend of academic and community experiences and I felt like this would prepare me for whatever I choose to do within the field of emergency medicine,” he says.

Dr. Patel is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from University of Minnesota Medical School. Her professional interests are in research, medical education, public health and international medicine. Her hobbies include traveling, spending quality time with friends and family, board games, Bollywood dancing and trying new restaurants. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the people. “I felt like I was part of the family from the minute I attended the pre-interview dinner,” she says. “The faculty members were personable and welcoming – it truly felt like home from day one!”

Dr. Pettit is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his DO from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. His professional interests are in research, critical care and hematology/oncology in the ED. His hobbies include spending time with his wife and son, playing with their dogs, hiking, golfing, ultimate Frisbee, brewing beer and traveling. His favorite things about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine are the clinical opportunites and faculty. “The level of training, acuity, volume, responsibility, and autonomy here is unparalleled,” he says. “Further, the faculty members, both in the ED and off service, are dedicated to our education, which makes for a great experience.”

Dr. Prest is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Her professional interests are in EMS/Pre-hospital and administration. Her hobbies include exploring new places, spending time with her husband, playing soccer, volleyball, Frisbee and any sport in which she can get someone to join her. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the experience. “I saw opportunities, tracks, and a family-like atmosphere, and I’m happy to be here.”

Dr. Propst is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from the University of Missouri School of Medicine.

Dr. Ryan is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Saltarelli is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Dr. Satorius is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD and MS from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Her professional interests are in education, simulation, palliative care and geriatrics. Her hobbies include spending time with her husky, Mia, running, cooking, food-ing and decorating. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the quality. “When I rotated here as a medical student, I was blown away by the quality of the faculty and how enthusiastic they were teach,” she says. “Now that I’m here, I’m even more in awe of the faculty and my co-residents. It’s a fun, hard-working family.”

Dr. Scott is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. His professional interests are in academic medicine, critical care and pharmacology. His hobbies include competitive swimming, biking, hiking, camping and beach vacations. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the experience. “I did an away rotation at IUSM as a fourth-year medical student and was sold!” he says. “It  boils down to excellent EM exposure with lots of critical care experiences throughout, great staff and learning environment and a fun, family-style residency program.”

Dr. Siddle is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD and MPH from the University of North Carolina. Her professional interests are in public health, disaster, policy and research. Her hobbies include biking, running, being outdoors, costume parties, exploring locally and abroad and craft beer. Her favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the experience. “They have volume to push you, the tracks to supplement your interests, investment from the faculty and fellow residents who are down to earth but smart and motivated,” she says. “Plus, Indianapolis is an awesome city!”

Dr. Walsh is an emergency medicine resident physician. She earned her MD from Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center.

Dr. Wang is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. His professional interests are in global health. His hobbies traveling, hiking and lighting campfires. His favorite thing about practicing emergency medicine at IU School of Medicine is the people. He chose IUSM because of the “people-happy, optimistic, intelligent community.”

Dr. Wipprecht is an emergency medicine resident physician. He earned his MD from Northeast Ohio Medical University.
