Esteemed Faculty

Jerome Adams, MD, MPH is the 20th United States Surgeon General, and first anesthesiologist to serve in the role.  Prior to his appointment in September 2017, he served three years as the Indiana State Health Commissioner and ran the State Department of Health as a member of Governor Mike Pence’s cabinet.

Dr. Adams rose in rank from Assistant to Associate Professor within the Department of Anesthesia at Indiana University School of Medicine from 2008 to 2017.  Dr. Adams practiced as a clinical anesthesiologist by providing level one trauma service, obstetrical anesthesiology care, and acute pain service at Eskenazi Hospital.  Additionally, he provided service to the hospital as chair of the Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for more than five years.

According to Dr. Adams, “I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today were it not for the experience I gained and the support I had from key colleagues and mentors within the department and hospital.  I’m constantly amazed at how often my knowledge of anesthesiology, medicine, and clinical skill set are utilized to address some of our Nation’s top health issues.”
