Clinical Experience

The anesthesiology residency program at Indiana University School of Medicine offers an exceptional clinical learning experience. The low resident-to-faculty ratio, high-acuity patient population, and structured specialty and subspecialty curricula support broad and robust intraoperative education, which remains a key component of our residency training program.

The Indianapolis medical campus encompasses five tertiary-care hospitals: IU Health University Hospital, IU Health Methodist Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, Sydney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital, and the Roudebush VA Medical Center. At these hospitals, residents experience different case types, patient populations, and electronic medical records systems, which supports trainees to become clinically competent, and versatile, and successful physicians. To further reinforce preparation for post-residency practice, we also incorporate a transition-to-practice (TTP) rotation that allows residents to learn skills such as creating and managing OR schedules, staffing anesthesia care team members, serving as teaching physicians while supervising junior residents, and communicating effectively with the perioperative team.

Another recently added clinical rotation includes topics to introduce and prepare trainees for post-residency practice. A two-week rotation on transition-to-practice allows residents to develop skills such as creating and managing OR schedules, staffing anesthesia care team members, serving as teach physicians while supervising junior residents, and communicating effectively with the perioperative team. These skills translate into both private and academic practice situations.

The IU School of Medicine Anesthesiology Residency curriculum stimulates post-graduate trainees to explore the science and practice of anesthesiology, subspecialties, and perioperative medicine. Each resident’s progress in both academic and clinical anesthesiology is carefully monitored and supported by more than 100 physician anesthesiologist faculty members with individualized mentoring provided by Clinical Competency Committee members and program directors.
