IU School of Medicine–South Bend hosts a series of popular events for students and the community.

Medicine Ball

For more than 10 years, the Medicine Ball has been the premier fundraiser at IU School of Medicine–South Bend and the best opportunity for members of the medical community to catch up with old friends and colleagues. The event also has raised more than $2.2 million in scholarship funds for medical students. Proceeds also support faculty research, capital development projects, and the Navari Student Outreach Clinic.


Outstanding Physician of the Year

Each year, IU School of Medicine–South Bend faculty and supporters nominate a clinical faculty member as Outstanding Physician of the Year. The annual award honors a physician who has worked closely with medical students in South Bend and whose work in community engagement and excellence in practice exemplifies the physician-teacher.

AMWA Trivia Night

The South Bend campus hosts an active chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association. Annually, this group hosts a fund-raiser on behalf of St. Margaret’s House.

Mini Medical School

As part of the annual Mini Medical School program, members of the local community are invited to campus to hear lectures regarding health issues of key importance. Lectures are delivered by area physicians, and question and answer periods open the floor to participants.

This series is offered in the spring, free-of-charge to the public, physicians, residents, medical students and interested health care staff. It is sponsored by the Medical Education Foundation.

IU researcher develops innovation to combat increasing mosquito insecticide resistance, mosquito-borne diseases

Mosquito-borne infectious diseases like malaria, which claims half a million lives a year, have been on the rise over the past several years and pose a significant threat to global health.

To solve this problem, Molly Scheel, PhD, Navari Family Professor in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, has developed an environmentally-safe and effective RNAi insecticide specific to mosquitos, turning off genes needed for mosquito development and neural function.
